Recently got a milling machine. Have a few bigger projects in the planning stages, but looking for gun related projects to work on in the meantime. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

What do you plan on doing with it? Bridgeport or a bench top?

Fluting barrels is tricky and requires a rotary head, tail stock and a fluting cutter. Plus it's a complicated set up that requires a barrel- which you may screw up. I've done some in the past and now would Most likely just send them out.

Pistol sights (1911s) like novaks and heines (the low mount type) are good projects but require specialized dovetail cutters and refinishing.

You can drill and tap like a champ on a mill so adding ghost ring reads to a shotgun is a good project.

As for making sights or mounts I was told by a tool and did maker turned gunsmith you never make anything you can buy. I think he is right.

I'll do some 80% ar lowers, would only go the 0% if I had a specific custom agenda, making it take ak or glock mags or something, which isnt on my list in the immediate future. I will be using it to do some custom wood furniture, down the road I plan on doing some intensive work on my future first glock, milling the slide to accept an rmr, some lightening cuts, etc. Wouldn't do scope rings or the like unless I needed to custom tailor em to a task. Don't mind buying dovetail or other specialized cutters, I already have a good complement of basic endmills, as well as other essentials, r8 collets, dial indicators, clamping kits, low pro vice, etc. The mill is a bench, grizzly g0758, I already installed x and y dros.

So which milling machine did you get?

Great first project for a mill might be an AR upper vise block. Compensators are a good milling project, especially clamshell brakes (done a couple of those), FCG pockets, gas blocks, vented barrel shrouds, mounts for various accessories, tools, sideplates, etc. A lot of the stuff you'll be making as a new machinist is accessories for your machine tool. Various types of clamps, attachment for high speed spindle, boring head, etc. Maybe a power feed attachment or DRO quill brackets. If and when you convert to CNC you'll need to make motor mounts, pulleys, bushings, limit switch brackets, and tons of other bits.

Have fun! If you need anything, send up a flare. BTW you need a special long endmill for an AR FCG to clear the buffer tube ring

Until Matty posts some pics in this thread, here are a few of a clamshell brake I made for my Mauser sporter project. Material is 316L Stainless, it is made from a section of 1-1/2" round marine propeller shaft. The thing was turned as a round part on my 12x36 lathe, then the sides milled flat, and the angles relief holes milled in with a 1/4" ball nose carbide end end mill.

"Easy peasy" is usually my last thought in the moment before I burn or shatter an endmill, or realize the toolpath I programmed into my CNC mill is going to drive the cutter directly through one of my work holding clamps.
