My friend went to a gun shop in oakdale to pickup a lower receiver. The worker told him that his NYS drivers license had not for federal purposes on it and he couldn't use it to purchase the lower. Has anyone heard this a before sounds like BS to me. So according to this worker you need an enhanced license to buy a firearm. Never heard of that. I've bought multiple forearms recently with no issue crom other shops.

Completely bogus. I recently bought firearms and provided my "not for federal purposes" drivers license as ID.

There is no requirement that you provide anything other than a government provided ID for id purposes. The non enhanced, non realid drivers licenses are still government issued ids. They just can't be used for flying.

You also can not enter a federal building using that ID.

If a NYS drivers license says "not for federal purposes" on it AND, it was issued after 12/16/2019 it can "NOT" be used to purchase a firearm or for anything firearms related. You would need a pistol license or a passport as supplemental identification to prove citizenship. They are correct!

But, isn't the FBI NICS check, by definition, a Federal purpose?

I found this article stating about California. Apparently, any licenses that indicate that are not for Federal purposes or that Federal limits apply are not acceptable for NICS checks. It also seems that older, non-Real ID issued before they started putting that on the licenses are acceptable.

He wouldn't need an Enhanced license (which allows you to cross the border to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, but apparently he would need a Real ID license. A passport would also be acceptable.
Correct. As I stated above: If a NYS drivers license says "not for federal purposes" on it AND, it was issued after 12/16/2019 it can "NOT" be used to purchase a firearm or for anything firearms related. You would need a pistol license or a passport as supplemental identification to prove citizenship, if you have a license issued after that date with the "not for federal purposes" on it . Either the Real ID or Enhanced License would now be valid. Appreciate you chiming in on this one ProGodProGunProLife.

Technically a pistol permit should be all you need since it has your address and date of birth and photo.
Correct, as long as you have a pistol license, that would be acceptable as a secondary ID. Not everyone has a pistol license, so that is why you would need the passport! The point here is, there was an accusation made that a LGS made something up that wasn't true and "that accusation" is the only thing that is untrue!

I guess in a twisted way it makes sense.

Unless things have changed with regard to less documents now needed for a non enhanced license, the whole enhanced/real ID seems like a scam to me. I had to provide my birth certificate and ss# way back when I got mine. I did not have to show 2 utility bills with my address though. It was pretty much the same documents as when I got my passport. Suddenly it's not good enough and I have to pay extra money (well I do have a passport so technically I didn't have to, but I don't want to have to bring my passport to fly domestically) and show the same documents again, plus 2 utility bills for it to suddenly be good enough again?

When NICS started, a State Pistol License was a waiver for the BG check. I bought a couple of guns that way. Then ATF ruled that since all NYS licenses do not renew every 5 years (upstate is lifetime), a Pistol License is no longer a waiver.

I still say that a State pistol license with your DOB and address and picture is legally sufficient to buy a gun.

I've purchased 3 guns at two different shops with a license that says Not for Federal on it and nobody stopped me.

Can you direct me to a government site that has such a directive?

I had to renew my drivers license back in July 2020 by appointment only at the DMV. I brought all the necessary documents for the enhanced driver license. I was told the DMV is not doing them at the time due to the pandemic. The rule doesn't go in effect until 10/21.
Technically, the FFL is correct but should not penalize a customer since the pandemic has pushed the official start.
