Educate me on AR Fluted & Dimpled barrels

Im looking to build my next AR and going to go all out once the funds allow. My idea is to get a 14.3 (14.5 cut down a little) barrel with a pinned Noveske KX3 to make it legal. I'm not sure which barrel I would like to go with but I do know I would like some spiraling, fluting, or dimpling on it. Is one more advantageous then the other? Besides for weight savings and the differentiation from others, are there any concerns that come with one or the other?

I would stick with fluting. The others are more for show than anything else. Fluting increases surface area which speeds cooling. Also reduces weight.

just be careful , a 14.3 with a 1.7 break does not equal 16 , there is overlap on the threading.

The only "concern" I know of that it costs more and that spiral fluted barrels are known to be less accurate then fluted barrels. At least on rimfire BR rifles.

Dimpling I dont know much about except that people do it to for the weight/surface area thing. But then again for your length about all your going to get with either option imho is just extra cost.

Cant imagine much weight savings with either method on a 14.5 inch barrel. Well at least a noticeable amount.

Also if your doing this in NY, the noveske pig is not considered a brake and is not legal here.

Before this goes in the wrong direction, the KX3 + 14.3 is 16" and I will be running this on a preban lower. I had ordered one from them years ago and I had to sell it because I didn't have a preban lower at that time.

If you're pinning the kx3 why not go with a 13.7" barrel? If you are worried about weight then you don't want the kx3.

I don't like any of it but a dimpled barrel cool's better and is more stiff then a fluted barrel.
You are correct, I think it's 13.7. I will 100% check and recheck before I purchase.

You only need a 13.7" barrel to get it to 16" with the kx3.....

It looks cool but the real cooling effect is debatable just like the fluted stocks, i am having a custom stock done for 1 of
my tikkas and the stock maker and i talked about fluted barrels and stocks he really did not think either was really necessary

it will dissipate heat faster, as it provides more surface area (a lot more, even with shallow flutes)

however, it will heat up faster as well, as there is less metal.

long longitudinal flutes will stiffen the barrel slightly, and the weight savings may be as much as 20%.

I went with a fluted barrel mostly because I liked the look

Barrel is "AR Stoner" ( I have no idea who actually makes them) , and the brake is a Nordic Corvette from midway:

I fit the brake to the barrel so no washer was needed to index it before I pinned and welded it.

It's reasonably accurate:

rumor has it, that "AR Stoner" barrels are made by ER Shaw, according to teh intrawebz.
