Subaru's are great offroad only if you drive 70mph+.
On sore thumb, Gilgo and Demo Pt, I've recovered countless Explorers that actually had 4wd but stupid drivers..
Yet I've seen tons of CRV's and RAV4's (that are awd) NEVER GET STUCK!!
I guess it mostly depends on the driver's use of the stupid pedal.
subaru's do ok on the sand. Just have to remember to get moving gently. Plus, those STI's have high performance summer tires from the factory. The low ground clearance is also a problem.You high center, and your toast. With sand, its all about the float. Dually tires arent good for floating.. especially at 80psi.
