Wanted, a machinist

1092 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  T.Webb
Hello All,

I may need the services of a machinist. I have a Ruger MKII and a scope that has a 60mm objective. The scope mounts commercially available, the highest one may not be able to accommodate that scope. I have one on order. If it doesn't accommodate that scope, I may need something custom or modified. Please either pm me or email me at [mail][email protected][/mail] if you can do this.

Personally, I think your scope choice is wrong- wrong because 50mm passes plenty of light, and there is no call for huge magnifications on a handgun- I know you are an experienced shooter and recognize this, so what gives with the monster scope? Are you trying to make some kind of benchrest pistol out of it?

All you should need is a riser block to go between the standard scope rail and receiver- sure I can make one for you, but there are cheaper options.
Consider a ProMag riser rail for $20: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&complete=0&q=scope+riser+rail&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1044&bih=826&wrapid=tlif131498129631410&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=14839781667665523982&sa=X&ei=vAVhTt-uI6Tv0gGNisXxDw&ved=0CDwQ8wIwAQ#
Plus, where the heck did you find a 60mm pistol scope, or a rifle scope with long enough eye relief to be usable?
I agree with everything Captain Will said.

If you really want to use that 60mm objective scope, let's say for no other reason than you have it, you could just get a riser. You will not be able to get something machined for less than that. Just my $0.02.
Brownells sells scope shim kits. Depending on how much you have to go up you could always put shims under the bases. Just one alternative.

60mm scope will also induce a huge parallax error to the gun- so I assume Steve must be planning on shooting at one specific distance?

Those shims are for adjusting the scope to rail if your scope needs to go too far in one direction of travel to zero. Put all of those shims together and you'll only get 77 thousandths of an inch. That's about 1/16" for non-machinist types.
No, this is for a Rifle. :toobadThe Ruger The Ruger M77 MarKII target rifle. http://www.ruger.com/products/m77MarkIITarget/models.html

Why on Earth would I put this scope on a pistol :dizzy (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=366613

Sorry for the confusion!!!! :B NOW can anyone help me if necessary????????????????? :xfingers
Would this scope work a bit better than making custom rings?

http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/products/scopes/vx-3l-riflescopes/vx-3l-3-5-10x50mm/

If not, then a Ruger rifle has the integral dovetail scope mounts. Is there a possibility that someone makes an adapter from integral dovetail mounts to a picitinny rail which just might give you enough height?

If neither of those options work, then I'm quite certain, any one of the machinists i've met on this site could easily make you new mounts, in either steel or aluminum. However, I'll bet it's a 4 hour (or more) process and I'd wager a good machinist to be valued at somewhere around a Hundred an hour.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the power is way too low. Turns out I ordered Leupold rings for the Ruger rifle, since the Ruger has a proprietary mounting system, and Leupold seemed to have the highest mounts. http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=82640

Now I'm checking for a ruger to weaver adapter. That would be easier. I think bsquare makes one.

South shore may have the adapter in stock. you might be able to "eyeball" the height before buying.
