Take it from me mate, it's infinitely better here. Even in the 'liberal sinkhole' that is Long Island. You couldn't pay me to move back to the UK.

Don't be silly, we just have to negotiate the amount... ;)

Seriously, that is a very disturbing trend: do nothing, the perp hurts you and your family, defend yourself and your family, and the state hurts you and your family.
You lose either way.
Whatever happened to the British spirit? Has it really been worn down by the socialists? By the way, you can take "British" out of the previous sentence, and insert "American" as well. Either way its bad.

My bride has been flogging the idea of, after retirement, moving (back) to the UK.
"Not on your life", says I.
Why?
The erosion of personal freedoms, same as here, just happening faster and sooner there.

We recently visited the Uk

After a late night out we were awakened from what we thought was a riot outside the hotel

There were thousands demonstrating with "NO KNIFES" banners

What do these people want

To spread thier jam on thier English muffins with thier thumbs ?

Its weird because the bulk of the UK is a middle class (broad defn) , family orientated, property-owning & law abiding nation. Law & order is always a hot topic at election time and I honestly believe well over 80%, possibly 90% of the population think you have a right to self defence in your home and have sympathy with this and similar incidents. I don't understand why the politicians don't realise this is an easy win at the ballot box, the Police union isn't strong enough to resist it, local, mayoral types have no say so ignore them and while it might not change the firarm laws in the UK, it would prevent the family sitting at home being prosecuted for stabbing one of four thugs intent on making entry into their house.

I reckon there's more to this story than meets the eye anyway. 4 masked thugs? What were they after? Drugs and/or drug money? Sounds suspect........

I see articles like this from Britain every so often. I don't know what the heck happened over there, how you can wind up in jail for years for protecting your life (and your families') in your own home from an intruder. Does that really make sense to anyone? Even on the far left?

But I have an honest question. Over here in NY, can anyone cite a specific case where a homeowner shot or killed an intruder in the middle of the night and went to jail for it? I truly have a hard time believing any jury would do that. I don't mean the guy who went out on his lawn and started bucking shots out of his AK, or the guy who had the intruder wounded on the ground then put 6 more into him afterwards, I mean honest to goodness self defense.

It gets worse...

A burglar stabbed to death after an attempted break-in at a house in Salford was on police bail for another suspected burglary, it has emerged.

Clearly bail wasn't set high enough !
