Two Philadelphia officers shot, saved by equipment; man in custody after standoff.
Two Philadelphia police officers were shot but uninjured early Wednesday, and a man was in custody following a standoff that lasted several hours, police said.
The officers were protected by their equipment, said police spokeswoman Officer Tanya Little. One was shot in the chest and was wearing a bullet-proof vest, she said; the other was shot in the head but was wearing a helmet.
Another Philadelphia officer, Kevin Gorman, was shot on December 10, Little said. About 4:36 a.m., police got a tip that the Gorman suspect might be at his residence, she said. Officers responding to that location were fired upon.
The suspected gunman was barricaded in his basement for a few hours, but a man was taken into custody about 7:25 a.m., police said. The man had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his neck, according to police. Authorities have not confirmed his identity or determined that he is the suspect in the Gorman shooting, Little said.
Gorman was stopping a speeding vehicle when several men got out and one shot at him, Little said. A pursuit ensued, but police lost the suspects. Gorman was not seriously injured.
