Transporting Handgun Out of State-Via Airplane

I'm working on my FL CCW permit as I travel there a few times per year.

How do I transport my handgun (s) when flying? Do I need to contact the airline well in advance? Is there a special box I need to lock it up? Can I pack ammo?

Peteinsuffolk just did this and documented it in a thread. You should be able to search and find it.

Whatever you do, for you non-NYC NYS residents, dont fly out of NYC if you dont have a valid NYC pistol permit.

It is from what I read, NYC doesnt honor anyones permits except for their own.... so if you fly into or out of LGA or JFK with a pistol, and even though you have a Nassau County, Suffolk County, or Upstate NY permit, you will be arrested!

You are forbidden to carry your handgun in any capacity to nyc.  The moment you enter any on the 5 boroughs without a nyc license you are committing a felony.  This what I have been told.  Not a legal expert.  So what I read here seems consistent.  I would go to the license bureau and find out more.  I think someone also told me that sufolk license bureau does not allow you to transport your handguns out of state even if you can legally carry them elsewhere with an out of state license like the florida one.  I have never looked tooi much into these claims.  So if someone else can shed some light that would be great.

If you read the thread posted above I made alot of calls on this and from what I have been told by florida dept of agriculture supervisers is that its only legal if you are transporting a firearm thur the state NOT if you fly in from another airport unless florida is a connecting hub. I will call my brother tomorrow and have him ask a lawyer because I got alot of different answers from yes its ok to no its not. Florida's handout states a firearm is concealed when its not in ordinary sight of other people a person carrying a concealed firearm with out a license is guilty of a felony of the third degree prison term up to 5 years. I will read chapter 776 more but I have been told its not ok more times then I have been told it was. So who knows whos right?
