The mother who brought down the Fort Hood killer

Kimberly Munley does not look as if she would be much of a match for a heavily armed US soldier on a murderous rampage. But the slightly built 34-year-old civilian officer was first on the scene after Major Nidal Malik Hasan began firing on comrades at Ford Hood in Texas as they prepared to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. The 39-year-old psychologist killed 13 and left 31 others with serious injuries.

On Thursday afternoon Ms Munley was doing her usual job of directing traffic on the sprawling base. By chance, she and her partner happened to walk past the Soldiers' Readiness Processing Centre soon after Major Hasan - armed with two handguns - cornered his fellow soldiers. Soldiers who witnessed the rampage described the gunfire as continuous, methodical and well aimed.

Ms Munley succeeded in bringing him down by shooting him four times, even after being hit by a bullet that passed through both her legs, according to witnesses.

"It was an amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer," said Lieutenant-General Robert Cone, Fort Hood's commanding officer. "The critical factor here was her quick response to the situation."

President Obama led the nation's mourning yesterday and will visit Fort Hood for a memorial service in the coming days. He ordered all flags at the White House and other federal buildings to be flown at half mast until Veterans Day on November 11. But he urged Americans against "jumping to conclusions" about the killer's motives.

Major Hasan, a Muslim and an expert in combat stress, survived the shooting and is now being treated in a nearby hospital, under armed guard.

It emerged yesterday that he was opposed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and had tried to buy his way out of the army rather than being deployed overseas. The request was turned down.

He had shouted the Arabic phrase Allahu akbar (God is greatest) before opening fire, witnesses said.

Ms Munley, the mother of a three-year-old girl, is in a stable condition, with injuries to the upper leg and thigh. General Cone said her fearless response to the gunman had saved countless lives. Trained in active-response tactics, she rushed into the building where he was shooting, and confronted him directly. Officials confirmed that she had continued firing even after being hit.

Those who treated the police officer said that her first request after being taken to hospital was to call her colleagues and friends to let them know she was OK - and to find out about casualty numbers.

Her stepmother, Wanda Barbour, said Ms Munley was an oustanding police officer. "She's concerned about all the people who've lost their lives," she said. "We're just real proud of her and so grateful and thankful to the Lord that she's going to be okay."

General Cone said that Ms Munley's actions demonstated that an aggressive response to a mass-shooting can save lives. "She walked up and engaged him," he said.

Ms Munley is one awesome lady. Heard that is is an advid hunter. She shot her first deer at the age of 12. She has taken tactical swat training. Fort Hood was blessed to have the right people at the right place. Now, I need to mold my wife into a Ms Munley. FYI - my wife doesn't read this forum...yet.
34?? Does she qualify as a Cougar ?? :) :) :)

I agree and disagree on the basis that his life while now possibly paralyzed and having to face the public scrutiny and living his life out in a 10x10 box kinda makes me happy. This is one jail-stay I don't mind paying for.

Think about it. In life imprisonment he will be getting excellent treatment. Gitmo is getting the H1N1 vac before the average American, and they get all the luxuries such as meals prepared Halal, korans etc. My feeling is if she left him alive, after his trial, put him up in front of a firing squad and finish the job. I would be the first one to volunteer to pull a trigger. This guy struck at the very core of the nation's patriotism, he deserves to die a horrible death, not be sheltered and fed for the rest of his life no matter how uncomfortable it may be. The Armed Forces still have capitol punishment. If this guy in the White House has as much balls as he did defending the Rev Wright he should not only authorize it but demand it as Commander in Chief Since this Major took an oath to serve and he turned on the very service he swore to serve, that should be considered treason and he should be tried as such and not just on plain several counts of murder. I'm sorry but I have no pity or patience for people who like to kill just because you don't believe in thier religion. Political correctness be damned.

Look at the bright side ... he didn't get his 72 virgins yet! And, maybe now his junk don't work.
The man is on a ventilator, I don't think he will live long enough to see the inside of a courtroom. When someone is on a ventilator and also in a coma it usually means they are about to die so I don;t think we will have to worry about a trial and his imprisonment.

Think about this. He wanted to die a martyr.

Why on Earth should we allow him the death he sought?

Sorry, Habib, you are going to die in a cell , alone, since they cannot even put you with other killers and rapists.

Dying does not frighten these people. Getting taken alive does.
Impressive, she has done what any good American should do, their utmost effort to protect others and their country. I suppose that once he was down and unarmed she ceased firing, I think if I were in her place, I would have emptied my mag after he went down. I would have made sure he wasn't getting up or doing anything once he was down, even if it meant getting closer and shooting him in the head, I would not take the chance that he could still be able to operate some weapon. Anyways, America had better be proud of her for being so selfless and fearless, and anyone who has something bad to say about her can be sent to negotiate with terrorists in Afghanistan.
She is a true hero.
I may not be PC, but, if we keep the POS alive just long enough to wrap him in a freshly slaughterd pig and ship him to mecca with a ventilator (running on a weak battery) that will quit as he's droped out the back of a C130 from about 20,000 feet (with no chute), it would make me feel a little better, but hell thats just me.

by the way, thank god for leo's like her. Balls and a combat mindset......never never quit.

I had to come back here and lament.

I sincerely hope that Ms. Hunley didn't place herself or her child in further harms way. The Jihadists are going to blame her for Major Nutjob's failure to complete his mission.
I think the mindset and SWAT & Active Shooter training she had saved many lives. If the Jihadist's do come for more, I hope she waxes them too. Infidel Style. ;)
Officer Kimberly Munley is truly a heroine and a credit to all that is good, courageous, and noble in life.

That person known as Nidal Malik Hasan (I refuse to acknowledge his rank or degree) is a total and cowardly disgrace -- a disgrace to the country in which he had the great good fortune to be born and which gave him so much, a disgrace to the religion in which he claimed to believe and the tenets of which he so flagrantly violated, and a disgrace to the human race as a whole. There has to be a special place in the innermost circle of Hell reserved for such as he.

My thoughts and prayers go out for Officer Munley and the other surviving victims of this tragedy, for those who perished at the hands of the craven coward who caused their deaths, and for the grieving families and friends of those who were lost.
