I don't know this to be true. I seriously doubt it, at least on Long Island. Target is not a gun friendly place. Currently, I don't think you can buy an airgun at Target.

Even the Long Island Walmarts are straying from being gun friendly. If you do purchase a long arm at Walmart, you are escorted out of the store with it like a criminal. Ammo purchases that are chambered for handguns and rifle are treated as handgun ammo and require a pistol license to purchase also.

I guess I'm saying, don't blame the clerk, blame corporate for shoddy training.
You are correct, however, that shoddy training extends to the store manager in the case of the Crooked Hill Road, Commack store. A personal friend of mine was confronted when he tried to buy ammo for his CX4 Storm. First the salesman asked him for his pistol license, then they got the auto department manager involved, finally the store manager and assistant store manager were involved. The outcome was that my friend pulled out his Blackberry went online and showed them guns including the Storm, Camp Carbine and High-Point carbine that were chambered for pistol rounds. He left disgusted and exhausted with a box of ammo after they conceded.
