suggest optics for a flat top with A2 front sight

2334 Views 19 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  NESROK
Time for an electronic sight. I have a flat top upper on my AR with a standard A2 front sight. I'm trying to keep it under $200. I assume I'll need a riser of sorts to see over the front sight. I would like to mount on some sort of QD mount or something incase i need to use the BUIS.
Are there any that can be mounted nore forward like a scout scope?

You don't need a riser if you add a rear sight and cowitness with a reddot

That looks good. So here's the silly question....what does co witness mean?
I have this set up on my AR, and it has not given me any grief in almost 1K rounds.

I went with the absolute co-witness version.

palmetto state has the vortex strikefire red/green on sale for about 120 with the coupon code.  i don`t think you can go wrong with primary arms too.
Cowitness is when your using your sights together. If your reddot fails, you'd still have use of your irons through the reddot.
Ahhh....so simple. I like the cowitness setup more and more. I think I'll go with something like that. Also like the 1/3 cowitness. On the 1/3 can the irons be setup for one distance and the red dot at another? Is that practical?

TimmeE...i saw a thread on here about the strikeforce. Sounds good, I'll have to look into that some more.

FMJ....I see you have the eotech. Good looking setup. Maybe one day I can move up to one.

Save up and buy an eotech. Worth every penny. I am running a xps3-2 on my AR.

I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for.....but a firmer believer in buy what you cam afford....lol.

+1 to saving up... Mine is the xps2-0

There's cheaper models of eotech and there's always used ones to be had.

The other one in the first pic is a Tru-Glo.. Cost around $80, works good, but I wouldn't put it on my AR

Unless it's for "the job" I believe in value as a compromise. Now, there's a bell curve there.

I would not buy cheaply made crap for say $90-1XX?? and can't afford to shell out more than I paid for my rifle on some optics, but good quality values can be found in between.

I really like the Nikon line of scopes, and something like a Vortex Strikefire is a fine value for a red dot range gun or plinker.
What makes the eotech worth the money?

EOtech and Aimpoints can take a lot of abuse. You will find that cheap optics fail fairly easily if your firearm leads a hard life.

But if you can't afford those two, look at the Primary Arms link posted above. I can't count how many of their optics I have owned over the years. I have used them in all weather without one single failure. The owner Marsh stands behind his products, so you won't get stuck with crap.
I think they're out of stock. Looks good though. I'll keep on looking.

It's a holographic sight. Our military uses them. If you want to try mIne one day let me know.

I just might take you up on that one day. Thank you.

Luckily for most of us civilians, when our red dot fails, we yell POS, grab another gun off the bench and maybe drop the red dot in the dumpster at McDs on the drive home. I do see the value for those guys who are taking fire on a regular basis.

Failure could come from a dead battery. Something that's easily left at home (extra batteries). Not everyone knows when they will be "taking fire"...
I have both an EoTech 552 and an Aimpoint Comp M2 and by far the battery life on the Aimpoint is outstanding. If I were you I would just save up and by one. The Aimpoint Pro is around $400.00. Save a "C" note a week and youll have one before you know it. Good luck!

Joe, as you know, I had an Aimpoint on mine when I got it. It was fine but with my not so good eyes any more, I now have a 3X9 scope on it. The Aimpoint was fine though and it now resides on my Desert Eagle which proves how tough Aimpoints are!
I would love to see that aimpoint on your desert eagle!! Any pics??
