selling or giving a firearm to people with criminal records should be a 15 year sentence without parole. Maybe this will deter a******s from wanting to give guns to animals on the streets.
You want to lock up criminals for criminal activities instead of banning law abiding citizens from engaging in a Constitutional right?
What's wrong with you?

[That was sarcasm]

Already is under federal statutes. Guess how often this crime is federally prosecuted? (virtually never) Guess who is in charge of federal prosecutions for gun crimes (Obama's Justice Department). Guess why urban gun crime is rarely prosecuted federally? (Couldn't be a racial thing, could it?)
And in the rare circumstance there is a federal gun conviction of a hip hop type, guess how much time they actually do get after sentencing deals with Obama's Assistant US Attorney. (nothing. http://m.jsonline.co...-322283481.html)

Violence touching unlikely communities in Chicago
A bloody end to the summer pushed the rise in homicides to 23 percent by Thursday, up from a 14 percent increase as of June 1. On Wednesday alone, eight people were shot to death in homicides, the most in a single day in Chicago in more than 12 years

It says they were "obtained" from friends and family- not necessarily given. and in many of the cases where they may have been "given" by "friends", you can likely presume the guy doing the "giving" was also a prohibited person. Many of these guns "originate" from the proceeds of theft, grandpa dying and leaving behind his .38, or a (usually male) family member who is already on the lam, in trouble with tyhe cops, or has a felony record.

Almost ALL of them were once legally sold through dealers, at least initially, so there is a big gray area that is subject to some interpretation as far as how far back you go. The anti-gun crowd likes to cite the initial sale, almost always legal , as proof guns are "too easy for criminals to obtain"- when they actually obtain them, and how, is something they too frequently ignore, Good for this study for pointing that out, but we have to remember the real deal with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals is managing to intercept then at one of these intermediary transactions. Not so easy.

Stiffer penalties sound like a "reasonable" solution, but balancing the possibility of prison against near-certainty of getting gunned down by a rival gang if you are not armed, it's not really an adequate deterrent. Adequate safeguarding of (legal) firearms in the urban environment would go a long way though- the folks in the inner city tend not to have gun safes.

Or licenses to possess. Whats the point?
Its hard to commit "gun crime" when you are stewing a decade or two in a federal prison.
