SCPD Pistol License Timeline

Hey guys, since we don't have one yet I figured I'd start a 2020 timeline for the pistol license. Dropped off my application in April waiting patiently for the call for an interview. Anyone else apply this year so far?

I signed up for an 18 hour CCW course and am hoping to have my certificate by November.

The new requirements posted on the NYS Police website for a Concealed Carry Permit are as follows:
  • Proof of completion of a firearms safety training course.
  • Four character references.
  • A list of former and current social media accounts for the last three years.
  • Disclosure of applicant’s spouse or domestic partner, any other adults residing in the applicant’s home, including any adult children of the applicant.
  • An in-person interview of the applicant with the licensing officer/designee.
But has anyone been down to Yaphank and asked if "all" of these are required to "change" the permit type from Sportsman to Concealed?

I'm hoping it's a simple process if you've already got the Sportsman . . . Just present the 16 hour classroom and 2 hour live fire certificates and you're good. The Suffolk County websites are still down due to the hackers. So does anyone actually know how Yaphank will administer this once people start bringing in their certificates in the near future?
All of it totally unconstitutional.

I completed the 16 hours of classroom training and 2 hours of live fire training that is required under Hochul's new Concealed Carry Improvement Act. After presenting my training certificate to the licensing agent at Yaphank, they did "accept" the certificate that was issued to me by Dark Storm Industries. Dark Storm isn't the cheapest, but they have a good relationship with local law enforcement agencies. My concern was taking the course with someone else who's curriculum wasn't approved or submitted to the SCPD. It was money well spent. Now comes the wait . . . I was told that my $5 amendment form to change the license classification from Sportsman to CCW is on hold along with everyone else's (assuming because of the pending outcome of the litigation that is currently in the courts).
On hold??? LOL.. They are really unbelievable. The Suffolk Sherriff's office has no problem issuing them.
Where can we take the 16 + 2 class on LI?

I am of course discouraging people to take training until the court case in the northern district is full concluded, the election happens, and people are having to renew.

However, I can say with confidence that any place that does firearms training by and large can do it. Also any NRA certified instructor could do it.
I submitted my SCPD Questionnaire: 01/07/2021. I just FINALLY got called for my interview which will be later this month (January 2023). I was almost 2 years on the dot from submission until receiving a phone call… insane!!!

With the laws changing from two years ago, two questions:

1) Can I take the 16 hour +2 course to change my original “sportsman” to a concealed carry? The officer told me I wouldn’t be able to handle a firearm for the course, but I don’t know if that’s true. I think you can handle a firearm, get the certification and then use that for a concealed carry now. Sounds like they want me to apply for the dwelling license and then once I get that, take the course and make an amendment for concealed carry.

2) Can I also tag on my semi-auto rifle license to this application?

This process has been miserable and long enough. I want to get everything I can now, and be done.

1) Yes, you can handle a firearms and shoot it for the purposes of the training. And yes, you can use that to get a concealed carry. 100%.

2) You are supposed to be able to, or at least your pistol license serves as the semi-auto, but SCPD was apparently working thorugh some stuff with that so maybe someone has a more recent confirmation experience.

thank you! Yeah I thought you were allowed to handle the firearm for training. This whole process is so ridiculous and the SC hacking scandal doesn’t help one bit… not to mention the 2 year wait I had for a call, and the laws changing

No prob. And bear in mind, there is nothing in the law restricting the particulars of that training with regard to time. CCIA requires you to have at least two hours of live fire training as part of your course, but there is no maximum. So if you go with an instructor friend or a friend with a gun in the vicinity of an instructor, you might take you between now and when you get your license to get enough proficiency to hit the side of a barn door.
Hi all, new to this forum. Not sure if I shouldn't bump this thread, sorry if that's the case. Just thought I'd share my timeline so far if anyone is interested.

November '21- Submitted app. paperwork, not sure when check was cashed.

January '23- Got the call for interview, scheduled and done on 18th (About 13 month wait). Was pretty straightforward. I did notice it seemed like they have more staffing and activity, when I went back in 2021 it seemed way less people (I suspect due to Covid protocols). I was expecting to wait a few more months but was surprised when I got the call.

1/27/23- Submitted references and form, now just waiting for card to come in. Cop said up to 6 months when I submitted. A buddy of mine who recently got his card said he waited 2 1/2 weeks, which I hope would be the same for me. As someone else noted previously, actually waiting for the card itself seems the most anxious part instead of interview call. Paranoid it get's lost in the mail or some non-sense.

Anyway just wanted to contribute if anyone was interested, I've been lurking this thread for a while and appreciate the advice from others. I'd like to follow up when I get it so people might get a sense of the timing at SC PLB. Thanks all.

Based on that timeline I would expect a call from SCPD in next 3 months. However last inquiry I had with them about timeline they were about another year before I’d hear… so who knows.
Welp, looks like I jumped the gun posting yesterday (lol get it). Just received my sportsman permit today in mail (approx. 2 week since I submitted references). I shot over to a LGS and made my first purchase (at this point researched the shit out of first choice, they had it on stock so I jumped on it). I could have exercised patience but fuck it. Gonna pick it up tomorrow after I register it with PLB. Went with a Berretta 92x compact for a duty gun. Our being stuck with 10 rounds was a factor. Was going to pick up a used .38 S&W special as well but nothing in stock, maybe down the road.

Anyway guess my last post in this thread, unless anyone wants to pick my brain any. Not trying to give false hope but it really does seem like the process is getting streamlined and quicker. Maybe they feel they want to reduce the heat applicants are (justifiably) placing on them. Looking forward to posting in this forum and finally being in the hand gun club.

Really? Seemed like you've been posting here for awhile, figured you would have card in hand by now. Good luck!
