SCPD Pistol License Timeline

Hey guys, since we don't have one yet I figured I'd start a 2020 timeline for the pistol license. Dropped off my application in April waiting patiently for the call for an interview. Anyone else apply this year so far?

I received it, on the spot. They sent me a letter, asking to pick it up.

Gary, has the wording changed, altering the business carry polaris? What conclusion did you come to concerning the delayed handbook?

Received pistol license today! It was issued second week of Septermber.
Questionnaire submitted = Dec. 2020
First Call = February 2022
Interview = February 2022
License = September 2022

Now I need to start the process for the full carry and training course. Class type came as Sportsman.

Did you receive your new license? Or do you need to wait for it to come in the mail? Curious as to if it now says "Premise" on it.
I'm curious on this too. A five year renewal implies premises, but they might also be (like the Sheriff's) letting people have some leeway if expiration is coming up soon for people who couldn't have gotten the training before renewal time.

Forget about Sportsman. You have three years to get your training ie before you renew.
Yaphank is not honoring the NYS website question and answers:
You might be right, and I certainly wouldn't be surprised, but you didn't post anything right now to indicate that.

With all my training combined, I am well over the minimum NYS standard for training with live fire. Furthermore, as Gary Highlighted, Bruen also covers national reciprocity. I hold licenses in PA, Ut, CT, NH, Fl, and NY.
Okay, so, combining your training for FL/CT, as well as UT, it sounds like you have about 4-6 more hours to go depending what course you took to satisfy what is need to get those licenses (plus any additional training you took).

Did you do any of that within the last five years? Have you brought those certificates to Yaphank for their "discretion?"

If they say no, perhaps you can bring those to a sympathetic instructor who give the remaining training you might need and then issue you a certificate of completion. (Although I think it'll take a while before we see enough come out of the woodwork).

Neither do they highlight which training agencies meet their standards. So, if we take a course we have no idea if it meets their standard for training.
I would not expect any government agency to release at list of sanctioned instructors. The course material is on the state website, as is who qualifies as a "duly authorized instructor." It might be fair to expect some more specific standards that Yaphank would use when excercising their discretion for previous training credit, such as requiring contact info of the duly authorized instructor, copies of the curriculum taught, etc. In other words, things you could submit for consideration of getting the requirements waived.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, taken within the last 5 years. Including hunter educaiton course/s, I am well over the minimum. As far as the sympathetic instructor (great idea BTW), will any basic pistol NRA instuctor work? I am in Suffolk, but I have been working with a Basic Pistol instructor from Nassau and I would like to continue to work with him. I am not sure I am understanding the " Duly Authorized Instructor" and where to find that insturctor that is recognized by Yaphank. Spending $ 500 is out of the question, let alone having the certificate rejected adds insult to injury. Furthermore, has anyone had an amendment made that has jumped through all the hoops? I don't think so, my guess is, we will be put in line behind all the new applicants waiting 2 years for a review of social media. By that time, I believe an injunction will have taken place which by default will put a stop to the training requirements. Nevertheless, I want to complete the training for my own standards. Thanks again, for the effort made in your last post. Thumbs up.

Joe:
The wording, on my renewal, is no different than it was on the expired. Not a "delayed" handbook but no existing handbook.

No. There is no "premises" language on my renewal. It's exactly as expiring: "sportsman and business," which means the SCPD is not yet applying the Bruen decision, on paper but they still have no option but to honor it, regardless of what the license claims.

I recived my Sportsman here in Suffolk ( Lindenhurst) after about 6 weeks after the interview. Had my interview scheduled for October 6th 2021 got it in mail November 22 2021. Taking my 18 hrs CCL the 27th and 28th as well as 29th to upgrade to unrestricted CCW

Thanks. It seems to also mean that they are not applying the CCIA either, giving you a carry permit that is good for 5 years, instead of 3.

I registered for the class with Advanced Training located in Smithtown. They were the cheapest $450. Plus had many open courses slots starting as soon as next week.
So upon successful completion of the course ( passing written and practical) $5 money order, visit to Yaphank Headquarters and the waiting game begins again... 🤦
I signed up for an 18 hour CCW course and am hoping to have my certificate by November.

The new requirements posted on the NYS Police website for a Concealed Carry Permit are as follows:
  • Proof of completion of a firearms safety training course.
  • Four character references.
  • A list of former and current social media accounts for the last three years.
  • Disclosure of applicant’s spouse or domestic partner, any other adults residing in the applicant’s home, including any adult children of the applicant.
  • An in-person interview of the applicant with the licensing officer/designee.
But has anyone been down to Yaphank and asked if "all" of these are required to "change" the permit type from Sportsman to Concealed?

I'm hoping it's a simple process if you've already got the Sportsman . . . Just present the 16 hour classroom and 2 hour live fire certificates and you're good. The Suffolk County websites are still down due to the hackers. So does anyone actually know how Yaphank will administer this once people start bringing in their certificates in the near future?

Congrats. Pretty much fits the timeline they give me last week “currently a two year backlog” very frustrating. I submitted my application March 2022 so still a long way to go here.

They are probably quite happy sitting on their hands with this “hacker” incident and could not care less if it takes applicants a decade. Despite applications being up drastically of late and trending upwards for years has even one additional person been added to the bureau at SCPD? Any effort to streamline the process to speed it up? Of course not. Its deliberate to discourage applicants and has been that way as long as I can remember.
