It's for my buddy, wants 500yrds :X.Has had the rifle since Edlemans closed and it has never been shot. Now he wants to shoot it and wants a good scope.I have no idea when it comes to scopes, irons and red dots re more my thing. Thanks :)
Got a Leupold ER-T MK IV in 6x20 and it's the single best piece of glass I've ever laid my little sticky fingers on.
Living on a .308 right now and makes me grin every time.
it's not cheap.
and for that money I'd include the Nightforce in the mix of what he is looking at.
He's doing benchrest, yes?
any of the 4-14.5 range quality scopes would be fine ----some even have bullet drop compensators in them

also get the best rings you can match to the scope

has he shot anything that kicks like large burro before????
Is he target shooting at long range Art?

Or is he big game hunting and anticipating the possible long shot?

If he's shooting at long range, go with (Joe's) P and M's recommendation. That glass is friggin awesome. If he's hunting, you've got the ever possibilities of a 40-75 yard shot, and that scope, even on its lowest setting, is just too much power. Stick with a Vari-X III in 3-9 X 40mm or 3-9 X 44mm. The "40" and "44" mm designation refers to the objective bell on the far end of the scope. The larger the objective, the more light it will allow through the scope.
He's been shooting most of his life.He wanted to keep this gun unfired but changed his mind aftger 20 yrs almost. He hunts and will be going to Maine with my other friend who has family there. He go what ever it is you need to hunt moose(lottery for permit).I think thats what he has in mind.

If it were my gun, I'd install a Leopold Vari X III or a comparable Nikon 3-9 X 40.

I would go with the newer Leupold glass the VX3.The Vari X is an older design. The Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 is very nice scope bright and clear and under $400.The Sightron Big Sky 3-12 x42 is an excellent scope for hunting since the lens wont fog when wet,the coating allows you to see thru the scope to take a shot.Plenty of good choices, the Vari was a good scope but is not in the same category with these aforementioned brands.
Art. Scratch what I said.
The Lupy I have is not something anyone is going to want to carry around while hunting.
I'm with T Webb on the 3x9'ish.

Hey. They're offering free shipping. If that doesn't sway you, I don't know what will..........
Seriouslly though, a 72mm objective?! Unless you're doing 1000 yard shots I'd be laughing up my sleeve at that monstrosity.

I have one of those. The Conquest is a decent scope, but it's Japanese made, not the high quality German Glass that Zeiss is known for.

I'd trade mine for a Leupold any day.

I believe Meopta makes the lens for Zeiss. The most expensive brands get the glass from Japan which is top notch for Optics. The Zeiss Conquest I own is made in Germany and assembled here in the U.S.A.,many high end Weaver,Nikon and Nightforce scopes are made in Japan.Sightron and Bushnell Elite scopes are made in Japan.Nothing wrong with a Japanese scope.

OK. I may have been wrong about where it is made, but fact is, it's their economy line of scopes. And, I just don't think my Zeiss Conquest is as good as my Leopolds. I own both, and I have to stand behind my statement.

Leupold is a good company and have economy made scopes like the Rifleman and VX1.The Zeiss Conquest is a good value for the money.I have both and found that the Zeiss is better.Nothing wrong with either scopes. The Zeiss has better glass and the economy line of Leupold doesn't come close to the Zeiss Conquest.Thats a fact.
nikon monarck 3to 12 it will do everything
Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x50mm with Mark 4 rings/base.

I like the model with the illuminated TMR reticle.
Meopta?
