I would go with a low power variable scope, and you don't need to spend stupid money either.
I use one on my .44 Marlin mainly cause I can't see crap without it.
Up close 1x or 2x still leaves plenty field of view; crank it up to 4-6x for the long shot. (100 yds.)
Many deer, and as of last week some nice fat hogs are down.
Granted it's a .44, but the point is lots of practice and shot placement more than power.
The scope helps with that for sure.
