I use Surefire's at home, at work and in the car. Flawless. Expensive but stellar customer service rounds out as a value.
But you're looking to land 747's. Hmm.
The mother of all?
There can only be one.
The torch.
Surefire L4 LED flashlight very well made, very bright, and small enough to carry in you pocket. Flash it in somebody's eyes and they are incapacitated so you can run away or kick them in the nether regions. Pricy and worth it
I've got the OLight M20. It's small and near blinding. I think I paid around $65.00 or $70.00 from Bruce at Hunters Essentials. This light is awesome.
I also carry 2 OLight T 20's, one in my briefcase, and another in my hunting pack. The T 20 is brighter than needs to be for walking out of pitch black woods, but it's comforting at the same time.
And, last, I also carry a small Streamlight in my pocket. If you ever find yourself in a dimly lit warehouse, peering into the engine compartment of a forklift, this guy which runs for several hours on a single AAA battery.
If you're coming down to LISC next Thursday evening, PM me and I'll bring them.
I love my Streamlight LED HP, 48,000 candela, rechargeable, 200 lumen, 50,000 hour LED bulb.
$135 with both chargers, one for the car and one for home.
Dual switch and strobe feature, with c4 technology.
What's the purpose of your flashlight? To keep on your nightstand or in the garage? Or in your pocket? I don't think I want to keep something I can land 747s with in my pocket...What's your budget for this flashlight? Do you have a battery preference? CR123s, 18650s, AAs?
I use JetBeam flashlights. Half the cost of a Surefire but about as sturdy...Made in China though...
I carry a Jetbeam I Pro V3 IBS which is a AA powered flashlight and have a Jet-III M on my rifle.
If you use code cpfjet at BugOutGearUSA then you get 18% off to boot.
The purpose wouldn't be for carrying around in my pocket. I'm looking for something to keep in the house to use in an emergency or just for everyday use.

I would get a JetBeam Jet III Pro ST - about 65$ with discount, you can use CR123s in the beginning and get a charger and batteries (EIther RCR123s or an 18650) for it later. The flashlight is not tiny but not large either, can be pocketed if necessary and can be mounted on a bicycle or a gun if so desired. You can also cannibalize old laptop batteries for 18650 cells which work great in these types of flashlights.

I used to think like you, until we lost power upstate for a couple of days. Now, I use battery powered lights and keep a supply of spare batteries.
In the "best-of-both worlds" category, you could opt for a battery flashlight that use regular batteries and stock up on rechargable batteries and a recharger in that size.
Oh ... and in the redundancy department, for the house, get a few propane lanterns and a few Coleman Gas lanterns.

Big fan of Fenix. Been using one at work for 3+ years. They have all but replaced Streamlights, and Mags are ancient history. I have the older version of the LD20, the L2D. 180 Lumens, two AA's last about a month with daily use.
Fenix gear has a distributor in Amityville. Shipping is dirt cheap, and came the next day.
Wicked lasers one looks cool, but it seems to be a bit pricey for what's essentially a 100W halogen bulb and a rechargeable battery, and it says the run time is only 5 minutes. Would be fun to set fire to things tho...
Anyways, how much are you willing to pay? Cree MC-E and SSC LED emitter flashlights can be had for a pretty reasonable prices and are quite bright, some reach almost 1000 Lumens, but most that say "800 or 900lumens maximum" really only hit around 400, which is still really bright. HID flashlights are available, but they are over $200.
i have carried surefire for quite a long time... their customer service is outstanding. just had to add that. i have broken the flimsy clips on the e2e and e2d lights, and i called and asked about the M1 extended clips... they sent me 5 clips... and the widgets that hold them in place. not just FREE, but also shipped FREE. we have called in about the tail caps on occasion if we rip the rubber boot, and same thing... replaced for free without sending in the old one.
that said... i love the Olights, and now i think i may have to get The Torch... just to have it.
Fenix, surefire, and 4sevens are all good. I personally think Fenix gives you a great flashlight for the money. I have the Fenix LD20 and its compact, bright, durable, and long battery life.
You wanna land a 747 this is the light, get a Streamlight SCORPION, not the LED you want Xenon.....
I use this light working in the clubs and it over powers all the lights and strobes, if I need to get another bouncers attention I shine it at there face from across the club and they know I need assistance... they complain about it later but it works, also saved my a$$ once, I was surrounded by 4 guys on the side of the club and shined it into 2 faces which gave me a window to get the heck out of dodge.... it's not a a good light to use for an extended amount of time as she does get real hot after awhile....
•Xenon gas bulb, designed to last through 5 sets of batteries (spare bulb included)
•Up to 7,900 candela peak beam intensity (78 lumens measured system output)
•Adjustable spot-to-flood focus
•1.3 hours continuous run time
•5.1" long
•4.5 oz. with batteries
•Two 3 volt lithium batteries with a storage life of up to 10 years (included)
•Machined aluminum covered by a rubber-armored sleeve for a sure grip
•O-ring sealed for moisture protection
•Available in black
•Lithium Battery
I also recommend one of these, you won't land a 747 but they are awesome and fit anywhere, had mine for 2 years already and use it quite often and still on the original battery...

SureFire 6P, or G2 standard or LED I would lean more toward the LED for a weapon mounted light.
