Pistol Permit waiting...

7675 Views 34 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  JayD976
Greetings,

Can anyone tell me how long a wait it should be for my NY Suffolk County pistol license once all paperwork has been submitted? After a year and a half wait I was interviewed, fingerprinted and turned in my references two weeks ago today.

Thanks,

Pete

Going by your year and a half wait, I'll assume you are going through SCPD in Yaphank, and not the Sheriff's Dept out East.
If you turned in all the paperwork that SCPD wants two weeks ago, you probably have a three to six month wait time for an answer/license.
This is based on my own experience (got my license 3/28/22), and what I have recently read at multiple sources.

Woah! After all this time I figured a couple of weeks, not months.
Yes spb, I went through Yaphank.

Thanks for the sad truth, I appreciate your response,

Pete

Yep, not the best situation here on Long Island, NY.
Here's some light reading, for entertainment purposes only, since you have some time...23 pages of posts over the past two years...

Good luck with the license!
A fellow I work with put his application 9-20-2020. Had his interview this past February. Here it is 6-30-22 and he still hasn't got it yet. I'm calling bullshit.

As ridiculous as it may seem, your co-worker's timeline is possible.
I started October 2020, interviewed November 2021, had my license at the end of March 2022.
I have a friend who started before I did, interviewed after I did, and still doesn't have his license either.
Maybe your co-worker and my friend are the same person, I don't know.
Suffolk County PLB is inconsistent in how long they take, other than taking way too long.

Come to think of it, I'd be curious if the current legal environment is affecting the issuing of licenses? We'll never know, but it wouldn't surprise me if a "hold" or "delay" was directed from upon high.

Has anyone heard of anyone actually receiving their license recently?

You call it as you see it my friend. I can’t think of any other reason for the delay since a year and a half or so has already passed since applying…

I got my permit 5 yrs ago and it was the same thing. People were waiting up to 2 years from Yaphank PD. I was lucky enough to live out East and got mine from the Sheriff's Office in Riverhead. Start to finish was about 8 months.

I got mine in october of 2019 took me 9 months from start to finish idk what its like now after the ccw got pushed threw.
1 friend was just about 2 yrs. Another is about 1.5 now and still waiting. With everything going on, it may get worse.
In 2 weeks it will be 7 months past my interview. Going on 21 months in total. No license yet.
Was told that Yaphank has a line out the door and the PO's have to help the line. This takes them away from working on getting new licenses sent out. So now, people are getting pushed back past 6 months. Wonder what type of license will finally show up, Sportsman? Carry Conceal? Hope this does not have to go further past 7 months after interview.

With every new stipulation time is added to the process. I don't think they have everything in place for the training element. A bunch of new applications when the Bruen decision was first announced. At a minimum those applications have to be processed into the system and NYS is in no hurry.

It won't be concealed carry. I doubt they will waive the social media and training requirements for concealed carry because your license process started prior to 9/1/2022. If you applied for sportsman that's being processed as dwelling with the right to carry to/from the range my understanding is that's what you'll get.

IMO it shows the importance the SCPD puts on getting people handgun license’s which is virtually nothing. They are probably inundated with new applications now while already backlogged with older ones. Have they ever made any attempt to expand the licensing department or expedite the process in any way whatsoever? Nope. The office looks unchanged from when I got my license in 1990. Their attitude is you peons should be glad to even get a license so sit down, shut up and wait two and a half years. I know they are nice to people in general when you go there but it’s like deliberate slow motion. And that attitude and concern comes right down from the top. Despite what they may say they really don’t want you to have one.

Thanks Paul.
Thanks Paul. Its frustrating when you hear how easy it is in other states to get your license in a few months.
I hear you. I spend half the year in Florida. Coming back to NY is like crossing over into a communist country.

I put my papers in I’d say three years ago, I absolutely thought they just threw it out. I got the call last week for the interview and just got back from it today, I can’t belive how long I waited
What exactly is gone over/asked in the interview?

I was in and out in 15 minutes , all they do is take your pictures and finger prints and then they go over all ur paper work which they make copy’s , any arrests u need a certificate of disposition and then u write a explanation about the arrests and get it notarized, if you live at home with ur parents u need them to write saying they agree for u to have it in the home n have that notarized , it was very quick and all the officers I dealt with was very nice
Ok, yeah that’s what I thought. Was curious if anything had changed.
