out of state licenses??

hey guys...
I was just reading some of the threads on the board about a lot of you guys have out of state licenses...how would one go about getting an out of state license without physically living there?? Do you need an out of state license?

Im just confused and curious on why alot of you have an out of state license...

There is a concept called reciprocity that allows the holder of one states pistol license to have that license recognized by another state.

For example, if you live in New York, you license would be recognized by the state of Tennessee but not Pennsylvania. So you could carry in Tennessee but not in Pennsylvania.

Now assume you travel a lot. There are certain state licenses that are recognized by more states tab others. Two such examples are Florida and Utah.

Neither of those states require that one be a resident of that state to obtain the license.

ahh...yes I have a NY license.  I was just wondering why some guys get an array of licenses and why you would need one.  I do not travel much except for hunting to the northeast and PA...I wouldnt be carrying my gun across the country or anything like that.

If you don't ever intend to travel with a handgun, then you don't need one. However, there are precious few states that recognize a NY license, so if you do travel and wish to CCW, at least one or two non-resident licenses will be needed to get any decent amount of reciprocity coverage. There are a few that can be obtained for pennies on the dollar compared to what you paid for your NY license. PA is $26 / 5 years. NH was $20 / 5 years, although I believe that may have gone up recently. Utah and/or FL get you the most coverage. Somewhere in the vicinity of 30 states each, with some overlap.
