Navy Sailor Arrested in Connecticut Over AK-47 Rifle

Exerpt:

A Navy sailor assigned to a Connecticut submarine base was arrested Monday by police who said he was in illegal possession of an AK-47 rifle.

Cory Dion Caldwell, 24, was arrested at his residence in Waterford, after an investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, police Sgt. Mark Willard said. He said Caldwell is a Georgia native assigned to the USS Springfield at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton.

The rifle was seized during a search of Caldwell's home along with ammunition, a 50-caliber handgun and two 45-caliber handguns, Willard said.

Caldwell is charged with illegal possession of an assault weapon and illegal transportation of an assault weapon into Connecticut. He was being held on $200,000 bond and could not be reached for comment. He is to be arraigned Tuesday in New London Superior Court.
I don't get it. As a member of the armed forces, isn't he allowed to possess these weapons?

Armed forces members in their private capacity have to follow the same laws as civilians. The exception being the Coast Guard as it is is a police force also.
Once again, a victim of geography.
What is interesting is that he was arrested by NCIS not CT. Guess the Navy did not like him because as far as I can wildass guess, this is not even a crime in the NAVY legal system. (UCMJ).
I'm curious whether the AK 47 was full auto or not.  Either way, IF he had no criminal intent (was just ignorant of the law and not plotting some violent crime) I hope they go easy on him.  Perhaps Dinozzo was just bored.
Hey, it might all have been worth it, IF he was busted by Ziva.  :p

Reading the article it looks to me like NCIS investigated but Waterford police
arrested him.

"A spokesman for the submarine base, Christopher Zendan, said he received confirmation that NCIS was supporting the Waterford police department but he did not have further information.

Willard said the NCIS began looking into Caldwell after somebody provided a tip and local police later joined the investigation. The NCIS did not immediately respond to a request for comment."
I have to believe that after the Fort Hood shooting, the military is enforcing what they used to let pass.
And I'd hazard a guess that he yak'ed to too mant people about it.
I'm not familiar with the area but if it is Navy housing then they'll have jurisdiction. Or maybe they have info that he brought firearms on base.

When I was in 30 years ago firearms on base or in Navy housing was forbidden but guns were bought and sold on base on a regular basis.

Paul
Guy is prob from a gun friendly state and didn't check laws before bringing his personal firearms to CT
Bail seems high, I bet there is more to the story....
All AK47 "types" are banned in CT whether semi or full auto.  CTSP make the determination by looks, function and parts interchangeability.

Doubt it was FA. Most likely it was clambered in 7.62x39 which is illegal in CT.
In their AWB version AK in that caliber is an assault weapon, any other caliber is GTG

Interesting that CT has such restrictive firearms laws in some respects at the same time that it has relatively reasonable pistol licensing laws (my limited knowlege of the same is based upon my wife's experience obtaining a carry permit there several years ago).

I am afraid we disagree on the definition of "reasonable". :)

Any state that requires you to get the state's permission before you can possess a handgun is unreasonable in my opinion.
Ct could thank their anti 2a politicians for all the violent armed home invasions that take place in those rich ct unarmed neighborhoods. Story just don't jive sounds like there may be more to this than were being told.

It's not morning anymore. No excuses. :p

A friend/coworkerof mine was a victim of one of those, or something like it at least. Thankfully he and his wife were both at work at the time. Middle of the day some guys just kicked in his door and went right for the bedroom. Wound up taking his .45 too. :(

You got me. Thank god your friends weren't home.
I'm betting that he probably was bragging about how he had an illegal AK-47 at work...

You'd be surprised how many people in the military get into trouble simply by trying to one up a buddy, sound cool in front of females, that sort of thing.

could have been a capture weapon from the middle east. Not sure if full auto weapons are legal in Conn.
