CHICAGO - A Chicago mugger ended up with two black eyes and a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he inadvertently selected a mixed martial arts fighter as his victim, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

Police said 24-year-old Anthony Miranda walked up to a car on Chicago's Southwest Side at around 11:30pm Friday and asked the driver for a lighter, then pulled out a handgun and demanded money.

After the driver gave Miranda some money, Miranda ordered him out of the car, Officer John Mirabelli said.

The driver grabbed the mugger's gun and wrestled with him. Miranda suffered two black eyes and cuts to his face, and accidentally shot himself in the ankle with his own gun during the struggle, according to Mirabelli.

The victim, who was not identified, was able to restrain Miranda until police arrived. He told officers at the scene that he was a mixed martial arts fighter.

Miranda was brought to a hospital for treatment before he was taken into custody on $350,000 bail on charges of armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

An alleged robber in Chicago picked the wrong man to mess with.
Anthony Miranda, 24, attempted a robbery and carjacking, police said, but his would-be prey was a 33-year-old mixed martial artist who competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championships. The tables were turned rather quickly, reports the Chicago Tribune.
According to police, the near-victim said Miranda approached his car near Kenneth Ave. and 55th St. and asked for a light. The man, who did not want to be identified, said he didn't have a light when Miranda pulled a gun, demanded valuables and told the driver to get out of the car, police said.
What happened next is probably what you would expect when someone tries to rob an MMA fighter: a struggle ensued.
Miranda was left with bad bruises all over his face and a bullet in his ankle after the gun discharged during the presumably one-sided fight, according to the report.
The UFC fighter was able to hold Miranda on the ground until police arrived.
Miranda got a trip to the hospital and is being held on $350,000 bail.
According to the Tribune, Miranda is on parole and has served time for multiple burglaries. He was released from prison in March 2010.

Ahhhh- I just love happy endings, don't you !!

Talk about picking the wrong target.

He chose poorly.

Is the mugger suing? After all the MMA fighter should have had his hands registered as deadly weapons, and should have had a warning label pasted on his clothes: "If you eff with me I will break some of your body parts."

Somebody get that poor mugger a lawyer!

I was wish the mugger had more "damage" done to him....
He should be happy he ain't a chalk line on the ground.

It would have been worse if it was a female MMA fighter. Do they exist?

Yep, they do......I've seen one of the girls fight where I train. To say she can 'have a tear up' would be an understatement. That twat of a car jacker is lucky he didn't get his neck snapped, sorry, correction....shame he didn't get his neck snapped.
Well all the makeup the fellas in the big house will make him wear to match his pretty new dress, should cover up all them nasty cuts and bruises. You'll hardly recognize him.

How did UFC find its way into this article. The guy went from a mma fighter to a UFC fighter? I wonder who it was and if it really is someone from the UFC if it was I'm sure Dana White would be promoting another UFC mugger beat down. Bones Jones beat the crap out of a mugger in Paterson last year.
