Man hospitalized after shooting at firing range

By Joe Johnson - Athens Banner-Herald

Published Tuesday, September 14, 2010

A man who apparently shot himself this afternoon at an indoor firing range near Georgia Square Mall was alert and speaking with investigators before he was taken to the hospital, Athens-Clarke police said.

But investigators still are waiting for the victim to become stable enough to talk to him before they'll know exactly what happened at The Firing Lane, 115 Mill Center Boulevard.

"There's nothing to indicate foul play, but at this point it's under investigation," Athens-Clarke police Capt. Clarence Holeman said.

The man was shot once in the head, but Holeman didn't immediately know the severity of his injuries.

No one witnessed the 1:25 p.m. shooting, he said.

Holeman described the shooting victim as an Athens man in his 30s.

He didn't arrive at the range with a weapon of his own, but rented a gun when he got there, Holeman said.

Can you imagine the amount of urine that would spill if someone built a range at a shopping mall on Long Island?

Oh yeah...hope the guy's ok, shoot safely, yada yada

Really, they'd need a stretcher patrol for all the soccer moms who pass out from seeing a dude walking through the parking lot with a gun case.
Their was a video of a mom shooting her son in the head and than turning the gun on herself at an indoor range.
The private range I joined is right next to the town baseball fields. It's the walk of shame during the summer.

Ironically, getting all the soccer moms to pass out for a while would do more for public safety than sending all of us "gun nuts" off into the middle of nowhere to shoot. They can't very well drive around hell-bent-for-leather in a 3 ton SUV, cell phone in one hand and a decaf latte in the other, if they're unconscious. ;D

Saw that. Sick crap. She left a note that said "....I want to send my son to heaven, and myself to hell..." Sick puppy!
Pate was seen walking through the lot with a slouch and muttering "swiiiiing batter batter... swiiiiiing"
New To The Walt Witman Mall.
The Indoor firing range WITH RENTALS
handguns, shotguns, rifles

Next to the abercrombie and fitch store.

That would be AWESOME!!!

However back to reality... The town hated the Huntington range and that was on a side road deserted sand pit.
That was pretty graphic as she was about 2 feet away from the back of the kids head.He died at the scene she died later at the hospital.I dont remember seeing her do herself but the kid was killed almost instantly from the shot to the back of the head.

Sorry to burst your bubble but as you can see from http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&q=The+Firing+Lane,+115+Mill+Center+Boulevard,+athens,ga&fb=1&gl=us&hq=The+Firing+Lane,&hnear=115+Old+Mill+Center+Blvd,+Athens,+GA+30622&cid=0,0,12198220737729325537&ei=sJGRTPTFFuCSOJva1ZQH&sqi=2&ved=0CB0QnwIwAQ&ll=33.940619,-83.472104&spn=0.014348,0.020514&t=h&z=16 the range is on a side street and the Mall is across the main street and a few blocks to the east of the range. The range is not visible at all from any major store.

leave me out of it!!!
I would like to know the full story. Was it a gun he had never handled before ? was there a malfunction or miss fire ? There could be a 100 things that led to him shooting him self. Or he just could be a dumb A** . but i'd like to know before i start making fun of him.
All these jackasses are doing superb work for the gun movement....

While it's great to be able to go somewhere and rent whatever you want and shoot it 5 minutes later, there REALLY should be some kind of 10 minute lesson at these kind of ranges. At least a supervised first 5 minutes so they can see how you handle your weapon, if you know how to load it, fire it, safe it, etc.. The range owners have NO IDEA what kind of person you are or what experience you have.

Incidentally I'm probably going to Shore Shot this weekend. Last time I was there, they just asked for my license (don't think any kind of check was run or calls were made), took my money and asked what pistol I wanted.. Go thru that door, put your eyes and ears on, and cya later. Awesome, but kinda scary.

Why? It should be so only if you allow it

No shame. Firearms are as american as apple pie!!! It pre dates baseball!
Wonder if it was an Uzi, which has a tendency to pull up when shot.  Years ago that father and son were shooting, and the gun turned up when the kid was firing, and killed him.
