MIDDLETOWN - A Berlin, Conn., man has been arrested for allegedly gutting a deer in a parking lot near Wesleyan University.

Lawrence Massey, 37, was arrested after local residents saw him use a hunting knife to "field strip" a deer, police said. He allegedly wanted to show his sons how it was done, the police report states.

Police were called Monday at 3:21 p.m. to the back lot of the 594 Main St. apartments, near the Green Street Arts Center, where several mothers and their young children were walking around. The report says the arriving officer was "overcome by a very strong smell emanating from the carcass" upon leaving his patrol car.

Massey allegedly told officers he found the carcass on the side of Route 9 southbound, loaded it into his minivan, and brought it home to show his sons the classic hunting technique: "how to field strip a deer after it had been killed."

Police said they found Massey holding a folding knife in his right hand with both arms covered in blood beyond his elbows. Massey had put down plastic tarps in the parking lot, slit the deer from "anus to lower throat" and placed the "guts of the deer, the intestines, liver, stomach, bladder, etc.," on the ground beside the carcass, police said.

Without being asked, Massey cleaned up the mess by loading it into the rear of his minivan to take it home to Berlin, according to the arrest report. Witnesses, who police did not name, said the behavior was shocking.

Massey was charged with disorderly conduct and scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court Nov. 11.

1. Was there anything illegal about what he did? (I really don't know and am asking the masses.)
2. What was the disorderly conduct?
3. Is it better to leave it on the side of the road to rot or are they worried that he was taking away a union job?

I'm too sctratching my head over the charge...

papabear...we need some imput.
He would of required a yellow DEC transport tag from an ENCON or Police officer to transport a DOA deer. When in doubt discon.
Maybe the deer filed a complaint? :-/
I believe it is illegal to pick up road kill. For any animal that you transport, you need a tag. I don't think there was anything else illegal about it. The only other thing I can think of, is that he was using illegal length knife. Theoretically, in NYS, knifes of a certain length are only permitted while hunting.
In any case, what the hell was he thinking? Gutting a road-kill in the parking lot of an apartment building? Seriously? Illegal or not, it's just stupid.

On the other hand, I totally disagree with a Disorderly Conduct charge. Charge him for the laws he broke, if he broke any, and let it go at that.
Wesleyan university is in Connecticut

So this must be Middletown Connecticut not Middletown NY
Its illegal to urinate road side in the woods even when no one can see your ding dong.
why wouldn't gutting an animal in a parking lot be ?
Public health issue. If you can do a neat clean job, do it on your bed at home.
I don't care how much Febreze he sprays in that minivan.....that smell aint comin out!! .....

Honey, whats that smell in the car, Oh that.....just a rotting deer I gutted.

2 points for traumatizing the little kids in the apt. complex.

Some people are alive simply because it is illegal to shoot them.
If it was in NYS then 240.20 sub 7 could fit. I do not think any explanation could convince a judge what he did, where he did it as having a legitimate purpose.

NYS Penal Law :

§ 240.20 Disorderly conduct.
A person is guilty of disorderly conduct when, with intent to cause
public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or recklessly creating a risk
thereof:
1. He engages in fighting or in violent, tumultuous or threatening
behavior; or
2. He makes unreasonable noise; or
3. In a public place, he uses abusive or obscene language, or makes an
obscene gesture; or
4. Without lawful authority, he disturbs any lawful assembly or
meeting of persons; or
5. He obstructs vehicular or pedestrian traffic; or
6. He congregates with other persons in a public place and refuses to
comply with a lawful order of the police to disperse; or
7. He creates a hazardous or physically offensive condition by any act
which serves no legitimate purpose.
Disorderly conduct is a violation.

Disorderly conduct to me a like a catch all , General type of charge that can fit, or be made to fit many situations. Aside from that, the guy was not using good judgement.
It's wierd to be sure... But this country was intended to be a place where you are free to be as wierd as you want so long as you are not a hazard to others or thier property.

Disorderly conduct is a bullshit charge if you ask me... You are not supposed to be able to just arrest someone for violating a social norm. This is no less of an outrage as it would be for a police officer to arrest someone for crossdressing.
They better not arrest me, ahh,I mean someone for crossdressing!

Um, something you'd care to share with us buddy? On second thought, never mind. :p

At the very least, this guy should have taken it to his house if he wanted to give his kids a lesson in field dressing. I'd be a little disturbed myself if I were a tenant in the building and was witness to that scene. Dumbass.
If the guy is a hunter, he should know all deer require tags.
