M40A5 Build... Thoughts?

Hey guys! So I just finished building my M4 Midlength to exactly how I want it and am getting bored and need a new project. Im thinking of building an M40A5. I was going to buy one from GAPrecision but figure I can build one myself for comparable if not slightly less cost. I know they do great work on theirs and completely understand what goes along with the build and into the rifles (spent sometime at PWS/WFTBN in Quantico :)) but I figure the joy of building it myself will out weigh the possible loss of 1/2 moa on accuracy. (Realistically with my skill level i think I should be able to build a rifle with 1-2 MOA at 600 yards).

Has anyone done one of these yet? Im looking to pickup a used Remington 700 SA on the cheap, strip it down and start with just the action like PWS does... If anyone knows of someone looking to part with their 700 SA let me know!

sounds neat, good luck with your project & post pix when your done
I thought about about building an M40A1 clone when I got into STA Platoon, but then I thought about the expense and the lack of long-range shooting readily available around here and gave up. Years later I wound up "settling" for a used M1A Super Match.

Keep us posted on your build, very interested. (Although my old skills are now probably better suited for dart board distances!)

thanks guys will do, this is definately going to be a long term project, i want to take the time to do it right.  Im searching for the Rem 700SA in 308 right now, once I get it ill break it down to the action and get started.  It helps to that one of my reservists is a school trained 2112 (precision weapons tech) and he has volunteered to help with any part of the build i get hung up on!

It seems that Brownells is selling new remington 700 actions again at an affordable price. No bottom metal, but that stuff is readily avail.
Come to think of it, you might want to look at the 6.5x47 Lapua cartridge for your long range shooting. 40% less recoil than the 308, and a huge selection of bullet heads. Hornady dies are readily avail., and the Marines are having a lot of success with that round
Why do all that work when you can shell out $7000 (w/ optics) for a already built USMC M40A5! :X

I REAL 2112?? Pretty cool, when I was in SS school I believe they said there was only something like 32 of 'em in the whole Corps!

I have put together a few hunting rifles in the 6.5x47, and am getting 1/2 moa @ 100 yds. with a Shilen #4 contour. Velocity is 3100 FPS with a Nosler 120 gr. Ballistic. Look up the foot pounds on that! Accuracy far exceeds demand.
I decided to bring this thread back from the dead bc there is some merit to it.

OP- I don't know if you ever actually built a bolt action rifle, it is nothing like assembling an AR. Blueprinting, threading, chambering, and crowning are all skilled tasks. Not impossible, but equipment and skill dependent. Having a 2112 to help is always a plus. I know a couple who work in the industry and consult them on occasion.

Here is the M40A5 parts list, first post in this thread http://forum.snipers...parts-list.html

The obvious downside to building a clone is there are normally better choices- as stated above. You can switch cartridges, parts, UNS mounts, etc.... even GAP takes liberties with their version such as the finish not matching.

That said, I am thinking about making either an A3 or A5 clone.
