Can anyone recommend a good quality scope mount for my M1A. I shoot mostly open sight competition but I now want to get involved with long range shooting. I am am not looking the cheap knock offs.

Springfield armory and few others manufacture side screw mount, which is expensive and after several shots, it can become loose.  In the military, most of side mounts with the screw were crimped and welded for the stability.  Other option is to place directly on top of the receiver (attached to stripper clip guide), but this will require minimum work done to the gun (if you are handy enough, this can be done easily).  A.R.M.S. and few others also make this mount.

the arms 18 is a good mount I personally use the smith steel mount with arms 22 rings. the arms 22 are removeable and have never lost zero yet. dthe smith and arms mounts have a channel cut into it so you can use your iron sights with the scope removed . remember to try and mount the scope as low as possible to the barrle. Stay away from any of the single or two point mounts. If you where at the shoot I had mine there.
Also smith make a bunch of differnt mounts. Saldek also makes good mounts.
