My guess is no.
This is an interesting question, since I have both US and Canadian citizenship.
To make a handgun purchase, the applicant has to be a US citizen or resident alien (Green Card holder).

But, I'm not asking about purchasing a handgun, just carrying one.

What type of visa do you have? I am a Canadian with a G4 vvisa and have a suffolk county pistol license. My suggestion is to call the licensing department and ask them. I did, then they asked that I send a letter explaining my situation (visa, etc,,,) they went up the line to find out if I was allowed. It turns out I was and then I went through the process. It helps if you have a NY driving license and a social security number. At the end of the day it was a lot of red tape but still easier than getting one in Canada.

If you decide to buy go to Suffolk Sportsman, Al helped me out there a lot ... it was tricky but he knows what to do.

Send me an e-mail if you want to talk offline about it.

I've got a buddy in Canada and he has a pistol license there. He'll be coming town to the States in April for 6 months for his job, and he was wondering if there's any way for him to bring and carry a gun with him.

Hope he is not staying in NYC!

Long arm should be relatively no problem. Airlines will transport it unloaded, properly secured, etc... in luggage. He will have to pay an additional luggage fee. I recommend he talk to a FFL before bringing it because there is paperwork.

Pistols - forget it. It needs to be imported and there is no way to ship it. He would need to import it firs, he can not bring it in. None of the shippers will touch it. I tried and it is a nightmare. I never did succeed and found it easier to buy here... I miss my Webley!

Regardless it. Takes months to get the pistol license so it may not be worth it to him.

To make life easier tell him to bring his Canadian hunting license and hunter's number and get a hunting. License when he gets here.
