So, I posted before about finally getting my k98. This weekend, I went to the range to run a few rounds through it. Loaded it up, cycled a round...... Bolt wouldn't lock down into battery, tried another cartridge, same issue. Tried it with 3 different ammo brands (one being a few milsurp rounds I had). Took it to Campsite to have their gunsmith check it out. The bolt works fine and smooth, and will dry fire. What do you think the cause is? P.S. it hasn't been rechambered in another caliber.

I gave it a good cleaning, but I did read on the web that it could be just that. Solidified cosmoline.

My vote is for caked up cosmoline. Other than that, did they headspace it at Campsite?

No, they sent it out I believe. I don't think they had an 8mm go/no go gauge.

Wait, do you have the rifle in hand or is Campsite still investigating it?

If you still have it, give Tony a call at Orion 7. They handle mostly M1s, but they have a ton of milsurps and probably have an 8mm headspace gauge.

They have it, and are checking it out or sending it out to a gunsmith in Bohemia I think they said. I'm no gunsmith, I'd rather have a pro check it out, don't want a 71 year old rifle blowing up in my face.

Bobby is pretty dialed in on mausers. He will fix it

Should've thought of that, makes sense. The K98 pictures are in my other post about K98's in the milsurp category. The bolt isn't serial # matching, but it is a manufacturer correct bolt.

Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport. Took a liking to it because of the heavyish barrel, and its sleeker profile without the forward assist and dust cover.

dude i have the same problem with my Mauser m24/47.

Pissed me off so much. I think it has to do with the extractor and that it might need to be dremeled properly to catch the rim of the shell casing.

I may take mine to a gunsmith one day to see what he can do but I just don't have interest shooting the gun these days since the price of 8mm Mauser is too damn high

Dirty chamber or gunk in your bolt recesses both front ones and the rear
Bent damaged dinged or improperly adjusted extractor.
There must be a minimum gap of .075 between the extractor (inner part that touches rim) and the bolt face.
If there are any bends in the extractor it will bind the bolt with a cartridge in it when you try to close it.
Also check for a bent bolt body, these rifles were not treated kindly when captured
Finally don't treat your Mauser gently, they were designed to be operated with force

Paul from Campsite called me, he took it to the gunsmith they use. Chamber is good/clean, head spacing is a go, no extractor issues. He said it works 100% with milsurp ammo, it doesn't like commercial stuff.
