Jones Beach Air Show

for all you boaters: unless you have a big enough yacht to put up with the swells in the ocean, I heartily recommend you ditch the barge and sit on the sand near the water tower. We took the boat to Zachs Bay for the first two shows way back when and after missing out on the majority of the low level stunts, never went by boat again. The crowds are always well behaved, well policed, but you definitely have to arrive by 11 if not earlier or there will not be a single parking spot left. You can thank me later.

Does anyone know of a close by area such as a park where you can get a decent view of the Air Show, yet not have to deal with huge crowds and traffic? I'm thinking maybe somewhere in the Baldwin or Freeport area.

Don’t need the air show I just hang with them at the airport 🤣 . They usually put on a good show for us here when they come and go. Unfortunately, I can’t upload any videos here files are too big. Used to go to airshow every year since the 90s when it used to be at McGuire Air Force Base in NJ.

Wife is a NYS Ranger. Her post is Planting Fields Arboretum, but gets pulled to Jones, every Memorial Day Weekend, for the show. Her LEAST favorite gig.

Deal with the crowds and traffic. I was kayaking in the bay during the practice day and you really can not see anything from any park on the mainland. When the noise gets to you from two miles away you have already missed a jet turning. Sure, some planes will make their turns over the bay and closer to the mainland, but they are turning to put the show over the ocean in front of the water tower. As I stated above even the boaters in Zachs Bay have a very limited view compared to people on the sand or on boats in the Atlantic. (I have done boat and will never view the show from a boat in the bay again, let alone even consider going to Wantagh or Cedar Creek County Parks.)
I was out on the water on Friday, we watched them practicing overhead and along the beach, very cool. Did the same last year, the Blue Angels if I remember. Then again back in the day when I was a younger man I "watched" close-up, from the decks of the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, CV-67 and the U.S.S. Nimitz, CVN-68, now THAT was a show!
