About 11:45am it appeared to be an F35 flying in the distance over Wantagh.
Is this the new threat by Putin which has jets scramble as a show of force?
Are you sure they weren’t just looking for semi-auto rifles with pistol grips and/or no permits?

Have to check those NOTAMs. I wonder what the cost is to scramble an F-15?

They were not scrambled there was already a dozen up. The UN is this week. There was also one or two kc-135r/t stratotankers refilling them while flying over li.
A dozen F-15 fighters flying around would cause more news reports coming from people posting them on YouTube.
The one F-15 seen flying across the skies at that time was the only fighter in the sky.

Not true they are up there. The UN convention is here. Yesterday two fighters refueled off a kc135 off of Jones Beach.

We would like to think we have continuous fighter protection at all times. A dozen F-15 fighters flying around a major metropolitan area would be easily heard flying around. The F-15 is our fastest fighter.

When the UN is in town it's not thinking. My brothers on the detail and in one. They stage upstate. I watched them refuel over Jones Beach Thursday.

I fully understand no fly zones, we had them when the president was visiting. The SCPD chopper was restricted also to fly. I know about the F-15 fighters. My Sergeant was a reservist at Westhampton Airbase and aware of the reaction force if the SHTF.

This was probably a VERY interesting interaction for the C-172 pilot :).

I'm also wondering what the speed of the F-15 was during the encounter. The C-172 probably has a cruising speed of 110 knots which I'm guessing would be close to the stall speed of an F-15.

The F-15 was an incredible sight to many that late morning. Watching an F-15 refueling off of Jones Beach?
I wonder at what height this refueling took place?

Aerial refueling typically takes place at high altitudes for several reasons. Fuel efficiency and more importantly safety. Gives both aircraft time to try and recover if something wrong happens or worst case time to bail out/eject.
