Multiple people have been shot at an IHOP restaurant in Carson City, Nevada, according to local media reports.

According to KOLO-TV, initial details are sketchy but the shooting took place on the 3800 block of Carson Street.

At least eight were shot and the gunman was carrying a semi-automatic weapon, The Record-Courier reports. "Several people were killed," according to the Carson City Sheriff's Department.

KRNV's Karen Todd Griffin notes that Carson Street has been closed in the area of the shooting.

The shooting occurred just prior to 9 a.m., per The Record-Courier, which adds the suspect is reportedly "down."

Carson City, the capital of Nevada, has a population of 55,000 and is located in Western Nevada.

UPDATE: The Carson City Sheriff's Office tells the AP that the IHOP is clear and the building is secure.

I hate the rush to misinformation in these cases by the media. I already heard on cable news it was a bolt action rifle, and that it was an "automatic weapon" which I'm sure is media lies for a semi.

Another tragic incident nonetheless.

My prayers to the victims and their families.
A gunman with a rifle opened fire at an IHOP restaurant in Nevada's capital on Tuesday, wounding six people and himself and killing two uniformed National Guardsmen in a hail of gunfire during the morning breakfast hour, authorities and witnesses said.

A third person was killed in addition to the servicemembers, and the gunman was not expected to survive, said Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the gunman had any connection with the military or the guard, said Nevada National Guard Sgt. Mike Getten. He said guard members were meeting at the restaurant.

Witnesses said a man pulled up in a blue minivan around 9 a.m. at the IHOP restaurant in a strip mall on Carson City's main street. He shot a man on a motorcycle, then walked inside the restaurant and started shooting, said Ralph Swagler, owner of Locals Barbecue in the same strip mall as the IHOP.

Swagler told the Reno Gazette-Journal that after several minutes, the man walked outside and began firing into the Locals Barbecue and an H&R Block in the strip mall.

"This happens in third-world countries, not here," Swagler said.

Fran Hunter, who works at a Sierra Le Bone, a pet shop just north of the IHOP, told the newspaper that the suspect fired at least two shots toward Casino Fandango across the street.

"I don't know what's happening to my city," Hunter said. "This happens in L.A. or Las Vegas but not here."

Local and state police and FBI agents descended on the scene, and yellow tape surrounded the parking lot at the restaurant, which is near a Kohl's department store.

Renown Regional Medicare Center spokesman Dan Davis told The Associated Press four victims of the shooting were being treated at the hospital in Reno, but he said he could not discuss their condition or provide any other information.

Kurt Althof, public relations manager for Care Flight, told the Gazette-Journal three victims had been taken to the hospital by helicopter and that two were in critical condition.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen says extra security measures have been put in place on state and military buildings in northern Nevada as a safety precaution

I got this off news 12 web site, it seems it was relayed from AP.

To clarify: I heard different reports at different times. One said it was a bolt action rifle. The latest reports have it as a semi-automatic. But I also heard reporters earlier on TV saying "automatic weapon" (which they often misleadingly say when they really mean semi, not realizing there is a big difference).

He said he did not know the age range of the victims, injured or dead. National Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen said two of the deceased were National Guardsmen who were wearing their uniforms.
This is Harry Reid's town too.......Get ready for a liberal S#@T storm.

I can only hope this is not a Mumbai type incident.

I would have thought most of the patrons would be carrying and stopped this guy sooner.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. The first thing you learn in journalism school is that all high-powered, bolt-action rifles are fully automatic assault-weapons.

Major Hasan syndrome (Ft. Hood)?
Fox News says that the shooter is a 32 year old Hispanic male, and that he ONLY fired at Nevada National Guardsmen/women inside the IHOP. He did not serve in the US military, nor did he have any ties to that particular IHOP restaurant. I wonder what made him tick? Was he rejected for military service? Drug cartels?
Now they're saying it was an AK-47. Police are still trying to determine if it was semi auto, or full auto.

From what I've seen of Nevada tourists, and IHOP patrons, I suspect that most of the patrons were carrying- 250 or 300 extra pounds. If they had guns, probably took them a while to lift up their love handles and search for them. And I have seen a lot of (uniformed) NG that were not carrying- not even sure if a sidearm is standard for NG when out for breakfast with the locals.

Sounds like "I hate the world and I'm gonna take my malaise out on everybody else" type BS to me. Lot of that going around lately.
Authorities have identified the gunman in Tuesday morning massacre at the Carson City IHOP as local man, Eduardo Sencion.

Three shooting victims have died, two uniformed guardsmen and a woman in the line of fire says officials. Five victims total have been identified as National Guard personnel.

According to the Associated Press the gunman used an AK-47 assault rifle but it is unclear if he was aiming specifically for uniformed service members.

"To say that he was targeting, before he came into the restaurant, military personnel is speculation," says Kenny Furlong, Carson City Sheriff.

Sencion, 32, died soon after the massacre from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had two additional firearms in his van in the IHOP parking lot.

According to officials 11 people total have been treated for gunshot wounds.

It happened around 9 a.m., on the 3800 block of Carson Street when a gunman opened fire on diners inside and kept shooting as he walked throughout the restaurant. He then went outside and continued to fire hitting people and several buildings in the vicinity.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong says Sencion lived in Carson City and worked at a family business in South Lake Tahoe. He was not in the military, and had no known affiliations with anyone inside the restaurant.

Federal and State agencies continue to look into the cause and time-line of the shooting.

Sencion's family members have hinted to officials that he may have suffered a mental illness.

Love the post headline and quotes:

Headline; AK-47 wacko kills soldiers

Here are the quotes
""But when he came at me, when somebody is pointing an automatic weapon at you, you can't believe the firepower, the kind of rounds coming out of that weapon." Yeah, I;m sure that's exactly what someone on the scene said

"He's a gentle, kind man who was very helpful to friends and family,"

Don't they teach that in Nutjob 101?

"Always say 'Hello' to your neighbors."
This incident brings up some interesting tactical considerations.
I'm guessing in Nevada people are somewhat free to carry a handgun? (please correct me if I'm wrong)
If so and you lived there, do you confront a determined psycho (shooting at others) with an AK with your .380 LCP? Your 1911?
Do you try cover/concealment and Escape and Evasion and don't get involved against those odds?
Do you have training or experience in trying to take a shot at this guy in a crowded, chaotic IHOP?
Is it worth trying to take a shot and stopping this guy with the possibility of you yourself hitting innocents?
Have you been shot at or have you trained in shooting at moving targets during extreme stressful situations?
Do you only get involved if directly confronted?
NO judgements here. Everybody who carries a gun (even [especially] cops) needs to have the knowledge, training and INTESTINAL FORTITUDE to use it in this situation. Without that, a gun on the hip of an untrained, unsure individual is just a conversation piece - again, I'm talking about THIS situation. I was just wondering IF there were armed citizens in/around IHOP would they have attempted to confront with their handgun or would they jump under a table/parked car frozen with fear, forgetting or not even considering they are armed or, thoughtfully decide not to try to confront these odds.....

Of course if they were directly threatened then I have no doubt that some would try to go down fighting, but what if there was a chance of escape?

(I DO believe that many shooting incidents have been lessened by armed citizens getting involved, but I am unaware of those tactical considerations)

Most of these are rhetorical questions, not to be answered until, God forbid, there's a situation and each individual is tested. We could all say, "I would.....", but when it comes down to it......
Sometimes the ones you think would cower are the heros and visa versa, and sometimes 'discretion is the better part of valor'.....

Your thoughts?
