KOUTS, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a handcuffed man has stolen a police cruiser in northwest Indiana, and he radioed police for help in finding the car's cigarette lighter and a key to unlock his hands.

Investigators were still looking for 22-year-old William Francis Blankenship early Wednesday morning.

Police say he somehow escaped from the back of the vehicle and fled Tuesday evening after he was arrested on drug charges in Kouts, a small Indiana town about 50 miles southeast of Chicago.

Police say it's the only Kouts police car on the road and that there are loaded guns in the vehicle.

The Merrillville Post-Tribune reports that the man can be heard asking police over a radio about a key to the handcuffs and where the car's cigarette lighter was located.

So I guess they couldn't chase him....

This has happened before, a guy in Colorado who was handcuffed in the rear of a cruiser at a stop for DWI got control of it and led police on a high speed chase, all the while in handcuffs. At least THAT department had another car...

That Officer is in for a LOT of taunting...
Another case of stupid! Arrested for a drug charge, now felony theft and who knows what else! Just plain dumb!

C'mon man...it's funny though !
Sounds like something out of a 80's action comedy.
We've got to go after him!

With what?

Back IN the '80's I had a friend's wack-job sister telling me how she stole a police cruiser when they came to her place for a domestic call... how they chased her for a long time

"Yeah, sure" I said, just thinking the shtuff was getting deep....

A couple days later my Neighbor, who was a local cop is telling me about the Wack-job that stole a SCPD cruiser "The ONE they have with the 440"... how they called Amityville because we had "The OTHER 440 cruiser" to join the chase... (apparently those were the only two with the big engines at the time)

??)

He's telling me word-for-word how she was taunting them over the radio, the crap she pulled... THAT was comical!

Yep... booze make people do dumb things... and here I was just thinking this chick had sh-for brains thinking anyone would buy her story...
