So, he owned a "furniture" business, eh.
Time for some real investigation: take all his business records and trace back all his shipments and see what he was getting, from where and from whom.
There may be interesting things at the end of that trail...

Mohamad Yaser, of Glen Cove, charged with illegal gun sale, police say

A Glen Cove man faces felony weapons charges after a joint investigation of gun sales in Glen Cove.

State Police and Glen Cove Police said that their investigation led to the arrest Thursday of Mohamad Yaser, 25, of 76 Cottage Row, according to a news release.

Det. Lt. John Nagle of the Glen Cove department said Yaser was arrested as he left his business, Big Boss Furniture, at 218 Glen St.

Nagle said police are not providing details of the investigation but said such arrests and removing illegal weapons from the street are a priority for his department. "Every illegal weapon that we take off the streets is one less weapon that can be used against another member of the community," he said.

Yaser was taken to the Nassau County jail in East Meadow; he is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.

He was charged with third-degree criminal sale of a firearm and third-degree criminal possession of weapon, both felonies.

That's an interesting thought, and perhaps you're right. But the article linked really tells us nothing.
I could just as well guess that he was selling something out of his trunk that would have been legitimate pre-UNSAFE.
I myself have bought several long guns in parking lots in the years before I lost them to Sandy...
