I had a tree fall down at my house upstate, I cut the wood to season it as I plan to buy a wood stove for my garage, someone took it all when I was gone. A few cords of wood is hundreds of dollars.

Yup- I had basically an entire, huge oak tree dumped in my backyard by a tree service for free. Buddy of mine cut it up and I split it. Over a cord and a half and I don’t have the room or the need for more. This red oak does take a lot longer to season than most other types of wood, though.

Yes, split firewood is a huge source of income in parts of upstate. The wood was set up nicely away from the house and someone took it away probably a few guys in a dump truck working in the area. It’s typical of locals to take metal or old equipment if they see it. I had a trailer sitting in the driveway… lucky I was able to stop him from taking it. He thought it was left for scrap metal.

Yep, I hear ya.. I think we are paying about $325 a cord delivered and split nicely at our camp upstate, in Delaware County.

Our guy calls it a load, which 'might' measure slightly more than a cord, give or take. We burn a lot, wouldn't mind finding it cheaper. NYS law says you cant transport un treated fire wood more than 50 miles, so even if we found it cheaper on LI or elsewhere, it wouldn't help.
