Edelman's pistol permit "service"

You have to admire the unrepentant chutzpah of this guy. Here's a cut and paste from the Edelmans pistol permit website, highlighting the most egregious frauds and fabrications.

Since 1968, over 35 years ago, Edelman's has been helping our customers navigate the tedious process of obtaining pistol permits. From our legendary store in Farmingdale, Long Island, we answered the call of our customers in assisting them in what has always been, and has become an increasingly difficult process. As our business grew to ultimately be the largest gun dealer in the world, this service was born out of necessity. We couldn't sell handguns unless permits were obtained first. In answer to the needs of our customers, our permit service was started. Since that time, we have been serving those needs of both individuals and businesses alike in obtaining these seemingly impossible to obtain permits.

Many people over the years have commented that the application process has been made deliberately difficult to obtain through the various issuing bodies. People have said that the paperwork is unfair and slanted toward denying every application made. Perhaps this is true. The specific language and precision with which these applications must be filled out is extremely difficult at best to untrained and inexperienced applicants. We have made it easy. With over thirty years of experience, our expertise has enabled us to get ten fold more permits for more people than anyone else ever in the business combined. We are unique. Problems like arrests, misdemeanors, DWI's and other background problems are easily overcome. Our success rate is staggering, virtually 100%. We offer a full refund if your permit is denied with our paperwork, we guarantee our work. All you have to do is tell the truth. Edelman's chooses not to work with people who have had felony convictions. We offer three free shooting ranges on Long Island. Our pistol club, Clearmeadow Pistol Club, of which you are automatically a member when you sign up, is the largest pistol club in the United States. Unlimited free private instruction from NRA certified instructors is included, as is unlimited practice time at all three of our ranges.

No one offers any of these services at any price. We take, and have always taken, tremendous pride in the reputation we have developed over the years. Police officers recommend us on a regular basis. They know us, as we know them. This mutual respect is something that can only be earned after decades of outstanding performance and service to the community. This is also a great source of pride for our entire company. In 1997, we closed our retail store in Farmingdale. Changing times led to dramatic reductions in hunting and fishing sales. For those of you who knew our immense store, it was a sad day indeed. At one time we had eight stores in the metro area. Perhaps it had to do with the views certain people held about the political correctness of hunting.

Perhaps the computer age became the recreational outlet for a new generation. Times changed, and we changed right along with them. The only constant was the increasing demand for pistol permits. As always, our total dedication and loyalty to our customers has led us to where we are today; still the biggest and best. Right now, legislators are trying to stop your ability to apply for new pistol permits. Spearheaded by Carolyn McCarthy, Charles Schumer & Hillary Clinton, the day may soon come where yet another constitutional right will be altered forever. When the World Trade Centers were completed in 1972, we were there for our customers. Now they have fallen, but not the spirit of the people of New York that we have and will continue to serve so proudly. We are truly at war. What will be next? Protect yourself with Edelman's, the very best there is. Call for information now!

LMAO...So is everyone else's. Unless you're a really accomplished scumbag, they have no reason to deny you.
I met a guy at a cigar store last weekend that does this type of service on the side. He charges $300..
My favorite part:

"largest gun dealer in the WORLD"

Excuse me? Did I just read that correctly? Largest gun dealer in the whole entire WORLD!?!?!
I remember speaking to the officer about Edelmans at my "interview" when I applied for my permit. I told him that I was concerned about making a mistake and had considered using them to help me through the process. He told me flat out that anyone who applies using a pistol service and has the slightest mistake will get their application kicked back. He said that the SCPD feels that anyone who is too lazy to go through the process themselves isn't "worthy". The officers were more than helpful and answered any questions I had and walked me through the process. I was actually surprised, because I expected tons of problems trying to apply to own a gun.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I worked for Edelman's for two years before Ishkanian sold it out. The gun store guys were among the most knowledgable and friendly guys around (Leo, Rich, Cleetus, Mike, Glenn, Bob and even Frank - on occasion!). The pistol licensing people were a different story. They'd make me to go the hunting/gun shows and expos to hand out fliers and tell the sheep that pistols would be outlawed within 4 months and to get their pistol permits ASAP through us. I did as I was told, since I was young and believed the BS.

The PP service does give you 24/7 ranges that I HEAR are pretty good, but I have no first hand knowledge. I remember hearing their pitches to the people that if your app wasn't typed, they'd place it low on priority list for investigating and such. That if there was a mistake, it was a felony. That you'd be rejected if your reference didn't pick up the phone, etc. It was shameful, but people paid.

I miss the gun store. But since then, Campsite has my business! Good people there, even if one of them has a crazy dog.

Hi people. I did use their service about 20 years ago. I was very young. It took NYPD eight months to process my paperwork. I miss Edelman's so much. I remember when they had SKS's for around $60-$70.I live Queens and thanks to Mayor Dinkins(sp?) and the libs we can't own Sks's etc. What a shame. $300 for Ak's,$600 for Ar15's. Wow, I remember it like it was yesterday.
I miss Edelman's too if for no other reason than at the time they had a HUGE collection of guns on display, especially handguns. If you wanted to see and touch a particular model, they probably had one. And as Judge mentioned they were pretty knowledgable guys and relatively friendly. I spent a lot of time just ogling the handguns while waiting my six months for a license. Their in stock inventory was second to none.

Jon. . . You know Leslie Edelman is a big player now, and has been for years, with Kimber. . . . .

Didn't know there was a "Leslie", in fact I don't know anything really about the history of Edelmans.
Do tell, I'm interested in how they came to be...and NOT be..
I'll probably get hell posting such a response . . . however; here is a "quick" synopsis of how Kimber came back from bankruptcy:

From 1979 to 1994 the name "Kimber" was synonymous with, "fine accurate .22 rifle." The name of the company was Kimber of Oregon and they were located in the Portland suburb of Clackamas. Kimber prospered by turning out really classy .22 rifles. They were ambitious too and began an aggressive program with centerfire rifles.

Unfortunately, the money went out faster than it came in and Kimber was always strapped for cash -- eventually filing for bankruptcy. A couple of years later a new corporation, Kimber of America, emerged from the ashes.

But they were still cash poor and a minority interest in the company was sold to Leslie Edelman, a firearms wholesaler. Soon the minority became a majority and in 1997 the Kimber facilities in Oregon were closed.

On a parallel track a small defense contractor, Jerico Precision, in Yonkers, N.Y. was having hard times too. Government contracts were disappearing and the company was looking for something profitable to do. President Ron Cohen found Chip McCormick, who just happened to be working on a project to adapt the Government Model .45 to be made on modern CNC equipment.

Jerico just happened to have the equipment and know-how to build the 1911. It was a match made in heaven, resulting in Kimber's now-familiar line of fine pistols. As the 1911 project was just getting started, Edelman purchased Jerico Precision, which then became Kimber Manufacturing. Today when you say "Kimber" almost everyone thinks of pistols and perhaps some new shooters reading this won't have known that Kimber first made rifles.

There is more. . . but that is a good start.

BTW. . . One of Kimber's head CNC men, Geoff Gliebe, is working with my brother Karl and I on our firearm for about 5 years now. He is a master at what he does and we are very fortunate to have Geoff with us today.

Now. . . Like I said: I'll most likely get hell for such a long post. . . sorry guys. I'll go once again to "The Background" where I belong. . . . but . . .
. . . please remember my saying: "We can all learn something." lol

Regards to all,

Eric

Eric,

Do you remember the two Rolls Royce's outside of Edelmans back in the day. The plate numbers were GUN1 and GUN3. I always wondered were GUN2 was and what it was on.
Yes John. . . I do remember them, however, that was lifetimes ago! This ole dude can't remember too much on the small details anymore! lol.

I do remember sitting in Frank's office, "way back when", while he was speaking with my brother Karl. Karl was the Northeast Regional Champion of, the then invitational only, Bianchi Cup in the early to mid 1980s.

Members like Eric that are both well informed and open minded contribute much to this forum.

As this forum grows and reaches maturity, I see other like forums aspiring to be more like us.
Very enjoyable read, Eric.
I think most of us are very interested in the history and background of companies like this.
Thanks!
Thank you John.

Like I have said from the beginning here. . . . I will, most of the time, be in the background as I feel this forum is for "The People".
Myself, being in the business of manufacturing and designing of firearms, I feel I should really hold a back stoop approach to my postings. You may have noticed. . . Out of respect to the many dealers out there, I do not say anything, in regards to the different retail stores, if I have nothing positive to say. May I say. . I do hold the new friendships I am building within this community in high esteem.

Thank you All.

Eric
I've often thought of writing some letters, just for fun... Like many people, I have a big stack of Edlemans "Lifetime Guarantees" that my dad bought with so many guns in the 70's and 80s.

Well, Edelman is still alive, and my dad is still alive.... so...? ;D (Yeah, I'll hold my breath)

Of course Edelman is also the one who's idea it was to re-brand/package Swedish Mausers in Butler creek stocks as "Kimbers". That gave the company image a black eye for a while.
