Cops Charge 7-Year-Old for Bringing Toy Gun to Class

A 7-year-old child allegedly shot a Nerf-style toy gun in his Hammonton, N.J., school Jan. 18. No one was hurt, but the pint-size softshooter now faces misdemeanor criminal charges.

Hammonton Police began an investigation into the "suspicious activity" at the Hammonton Early Childhood Education Center Jan. 18 after school officials alerted them to the incident.

The "gun" the child brought to school was a $5 toy gun, similar to a Nerf gun, that shoots soft ping pong type balls, according to the school's superintendent.

Officials also say that there was no evidence of anyone being threatened. The child's mother told school officials that she didn't know her son brought the toy to school.

Dr. Dan Blachford, the Hammonton Board of Education superintendent, said the school has a zero tolerance policy.

"We are just very vigilant and we feel that if we draw a very strict line then we have much less worry about someone bringing in something dangerous," said Blachford.

Deseire Gherard, a parent of one of the students at the school, agrees with the policy.

"I'd rather it be dealt with more severely than not," said Gherard. "I would rather them go a little bit too far for the safety of all the children then to say 'okay, it was probably nothing.'"

Police charged the 7-year-old with possessing an imitation firearm in or on an education institution - a misdemeanor and a minor juvenile offense in New Jersey.

School officials described the child as "a nice kid" and "a good student." Authorities haven't commented on what specific disciplinary action or punishment the boy faces though it could involve counseling and other resources made available to the family.

In a related story, Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a press release targeting toy stores in the surrounding Hammonton vicinity.

The mayor was quoted as saying ... "We need to close this toy gun loophole" !!

Total bullshit. If I were a cop in that jurisdiction, I would chuckle and not act in a manner such as that. It's a nerf gun FFS. My 7yr old has a few of them !!

I don't know how it happened, but this Country has become pussyfied. I will NOT allow that in my home. I'm bringing back the '70's here. You step out of line, you get slapped back into line. My kids are turning out just fine.

Are you surprised that your post wasnt posted? Im not! Theres usually only one side of the story in the media.

I wonder if bloomy will send undercover agents to the nearby toy stores and asking parents the mental state of their chidren

Well, it's NJ, things are even worse there than here. Utterly ridiculous though, this is a time for moderate discipline and and explanation of why not to bring toy guns to school, not heavy handed punishment. This zero tolerance crap is handing out a heavy punishment to a kid who doesn't even understand it. This is not progress or safety, this is deterioration of society.

90% of all nerf guns used to commit such crimes in New Jersey come from China. Clearly we must close this dangerous loophole that puts common sense and decency to such risk. We must act now, for the children.

Newsflash:

Mayor Bloomberg as part of his ongoing investigation sent ten of his investigators into Arizona Toys R Us stores. The investigators were able to buy several large quantities of ping pong balls despite admitting that they had never played ping pong.

Incident to this investiagtion was the arrest of two 5 year olds that were caught having a nerf bow and arrow fight in aisle 6.
