The brother of slain Cecil the lion, whose death sparked widespread outrage this week, was killed by a hunter Saturday in Zimbabwe, a local conservation group said.
"I'm very disappointed. I'm heartbroken," Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force chairman Johnny Rodrigues told USA TODAY about the death of the lion named Jericho. "It's just too much."
The news comes after Cecil was shot with a bow and arrow before being tracked and killed early last month by Minnesota hunter and dentist Walter Palmer, who allegedly paid $50,000 to hunt him.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was in contact with Palmer on Friday about the lion's death, which is suspected to be illegal. No formal charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
Zimbabwe wants to extradite Palmer, Environmental Minister Oppah Muchinguri said earlier this week. Currently, the U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with the African nation. However, if the wildlife service finds evidence of wrongdoing, it will pass its findings to the Department of Justice, which means Palmer could be tried in the U.S.
A beloved Zimbabwean cultural figure, Cecil was fitted with a GPS tracker by a research program from the University of Oxford to trace his movements throughout Hwange National Park.
Fear remains for Cecil's cubs, whom Jericho had been seen protecting. Male lions commonly kill the cubs of their rivals when they take over a pride.
"The natural law in lion society is that when a male dies and his weakened coalition is usurped, the new incoming males kill their predecessors' cubs. This may not happen because Cecil's brother is still holding the fort," Oxford's David Macdonald said in a statement Thursday.

Brother of Zimbabwe's lion Cecil appears alive and well: researcher

HARARE | BY MACDONALD DZIRUTWE

The brother of Cecil, the lion killed in Zimbabwe by an American hunter last month, is not dead, a researcher monitoring the pride told Reuters, contradicting media reports that Jericho had been killed.
"He looks alive and well to me as far as I can tell," said Brent Stapelkamp, field researcher for the Hwange Lion Research Project which is monitoring the lion with a GPS tag.
A group called the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force posted on its Facebook page that Jericho had been killed at 4 p.m. on Saturday, a report picked up by some Western news media that was rapidly spread on Twitter.
That generated a furious reaction on the social networking site where animal lovers had already been expressing their fury at the killing on July 1 of Cecil, a rare black-maned lion that was a familiar sight at Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park.
Stapelkamp said readings from Jericho's GPS tag indicated he was moving around as usual and appeared to be with a female.
"When I heard that report, I had a look on the computer and his movements look regular. He sent a GPS point from his collar from 8:06 p.m. (02:06 p.m. EDT). Everything looks fine," Stapelkamp told Reuters.
Earlier on Saturday, Zimbabwe's parks authority imposed an indefinite ban on big game hunting outside the national park from which Cecil was lured before being killed on July 1.
A source at the parks agency told Reuters a second lion had been killed illegally by a foreign hunter in Zimbabwe on July 3. That has not been confirmed by officials.

Meanwhile, 5 US servicemen are still dead as sh*t, murdered here on US soil and the national conversation is back to the Kardashians and a lion on the other side of the planet.
Nice to know we have our priorities straight.

Edit: my usual, spelling sux

The continent of Africa is a toilet of a place with muslim fiends enslaving Christian children, murdering and torturing in the name of their religion. Daily.

They have epidemics of horrible diseases that decimate populations, poverty, drought, infestation and nevertheless, a stupid lion is followed like a celebrity. A lion that was destined to inevitably die a slow painful death at the hands of other lions and/or hyenas, and to rot in some dark jungle crap hole, never to be seen again.
These tear jerking fools must really think lions talk to each other like Simba or something. Jeeshh, the stupid hurts.

Natural order of things. Remove the Dentist (sorry Barn, Toothy et al
) from the equation and it's another lion, a Rhino, maybe a rabid Giraffe. Whatever the cause, the outcry over this is amazing.
More people are pissed about a lion being shot than a huge American Organization harvesting and selling human fetuses for cold hard cash. WTF?

"The natural law in lion society is that when a male dies and his weakened coalition is usurped, the new incoming males kill their predecessors' cubs. This may not happen because Cecil's brother is still holding the fort," Oxford's David Macdonald said in a statement Thursday. "

We love you anyway
Yes we do Pedro.

And I have to say that I, being an avid animal lover, can't for the life of me understand the celebrity surrounding this story when children are being beheaded or crucified on a daily basis by ISIS (yeah, barry, ISIS, not ISIL), innocent people are tortured day in and day out in NK by their own Dear Leader, our own citizens on the Mexican border are terrorized and sometimes killed by the crap that sneaks in while our border patrol is told to stand down, innocent babies are harvested for their body parts while a liberal judge decides a restraining order is a good idea to "protect" the villains, etc., etc., etc. Gosh, I'm sick just thinking about what's going on out there.

Yes, I'm very sad that Cecil is dead but come on now, let's get our priorities straight here. smh

We've now entered Stupidville.

So there's this company in London called Goldgenie. Guess what it does? It makes gold things. Its latest gold thing is a 24-karat gold HTC One M9, with a laser engraving of Cecil the Lion, who was killed in Zimbabwe earlier this week. The caption underneath: "For Cecil and His Kingdom." It's a way to show your incredible wealth. Wait, no, I mean lack of taste. Shoot, I meant to say support.
Some quick back-o'-the-napkin math: The phone costs £1,580.83, which amounts to $2,469.97. The One M9, unlocked-which, let's remember, ALSO COMES IN GOLD-costs $650 or so. That's an $1,800 show of support, all of which goes to Goldgenie. But there's good news! 10 percent of proceeds go to a charity supporting the park Cecil lived in. (That amounts to $247, roughly.) So I guess you could buy this and that'd be nice. Or, of course, you could just buy an M9 and then give seven times as much to charity. But that's up to you.
