CAUTION   Benson's can get you in trouble

Stopped at Benson's and asked for a mag extension (Kriss) for a pre-ban Glock 21 mag.
What happened next was unbelievable.
The clerks all acted like I had asked for an illegal product and started screaming at me that it was a felony to put a pre-ban magazine in a post ban rifle.
They even went as far as to check with the gunsmith?????
I told them they were wrong and to check the NYS law up at Albany but they wouldn't budge saying they knew the law.
Be very careful when buying anything there and know the law yourself because obviously this dealer doesn't and could get you in deep trouble.

Yeah... just order it on the internet
There have been multiple reports of certain shops having an issue with the pre-ban mag in post-ban firearm over the years.

It is understandable to expect the police to not know the laws (to be fair - they have to know quite a bit of them), but we should be able to expect gun owners, and most certainly gun STORE owners, to know the laws.
Good thing, they would have charged too much $$$ anyway.
Prices there alittle,um,high
I guess I can cross Benson's off my list!
One of the few times I've ever wanted to tell an entire gunshop to foad.

The other one was in islip on freeman ave. (wont put the name, but you all know)
Never been there and I have no opinion on the store....but at least they erred on the side of caution. They are obviously trying to keep you OUT of trouble.
Didn't we just have this discussion this morning?
I was there  last month just looking to get a new gun that I just gotta have, Didnt find one of those there, but was amazed that their prices are way way more than most of the other local shops.
I've had some interesting conversations with the good people behind the counter at Bensons. :sarcasm
You know, statements like "M16s are not accurate past 200 yards..." (that was after I told the guy that I was a Marine Corps PMI. (face palm).)
There have been some good guys there but for the most part, it's hit or miss. Sometimes its just better to walk away and go back another day and deal with a different person.
doesn't sound kosher, example: can one take a pre-ban 10 round mag and turn it into a 20 ?
Thanks for the heads up.
Your voice is one I pay attention to here on the boards.

Ain't that the truth.
Sadly.
It seems like we see too much of that kind of thing from one shop,
then another, depending on the day.
C'mon guys, get it together!
I was told the same thing at bensons. I didnt drop kick the guy but I did hand him back the rifle I was looking at and thank him for his time. Haven't been back since.
Friend of mine got banged out pretty bad on a beat up Mosin there, but that's about all I know of them. Either way, I'll stick to South Shore.

Thanks for the heads up.
Hold on a sec: You were asking for a mag EXTENSION, which when attacher, becomes part of the "feeding device", does it not?

I'm not sure what the design is on these but erring on the side af caution is a far cry from 'CAUTION" they can get you in trouble, isn't it?

Not busting your chops here, but if there is any doubt as to legality then it should be sorted and ultimately the responsibility lies with the BUYER since it is NOT illegal to SELL a Postban HCAFD. Given what the gun store owners have been through i would be supercautions too.

Never dealt with Bensons and can't/won't say anything about the store, personalities, etc.
Ive learned you have to get the right person, the shop is about 10 minutes from me so I've been going there for a while. Usually just buy ammo and such, but the few times I was interested in a rifle I'd just bide my time until the guy I like was free and talk to him.

Perfectly legal to do ANY modifications to a pre-ban mag. I also asked them to call NYS police in Albany, but they said they knew the law.
If it's anything like this:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/7-KSVMAGKIT
then my interpretation of the law (and I'm not a lawyer) is that Bensons probably SAVED you from yourself.

Even using a preban mag as the core component, you are creatring a new assembly or device, which holds more than 10 rounds, and you are doing it in the postban period.

This would be like welding two preban 30's together to make a 60 round AR mag. Except if you did that,m you could at least argue that all the parts it was built from are preban.

Edit: OK if you say so.But modification of a mag and creating a new ammunition feeding device are two different things. If you clip more than 10 rounds of belt fed ammo together it's illegal- andf that is using preban clips.

Amd whi;le I agree calling NYS police in albany is a good plan, you should probably check to see if the downstate police have the same playbook.
