ROSEVILLE, Calif. - A Northern California driver is lucky that he was packing heat when his SUV veered off the road and plunged into a freezing creek.

The 28-year-old driver was startled when his cell phone rang, a Roseville Fire Department spokesman told the Associated Press, and the SUV went off the road, through a guardrail and into Pleasant Grove Creek.

The driver, an armed security guard at Sacramento-area casino, used a handgun to blast his way out of the quickly sinking vehicle.

He suffered minor injuries in the crash, and flagged down a passing car after shooting his way to freedom.

glad he got out, but getting startled from a ringing cell phone to drive into a creek, maybe he shouldn't have a pistol.
Startled from a ringing cell phone? Or, talking on a cell phone? Hmmmm... :-/
most likey nodding off while driving phone range startled him and went off the road
His SUV didn't veer off the road. He drove his SUV off the road.

People always blame everything but themselves for their own inability to operate a vehicle.
I'm sure they'll bring up some discharging his weapon ordinance.
