ford or chevy?....while nikon has great products and quality glass, thier customer service SUCKS...therefore, I'd go with burris
Both make quality scopes (and binoculars). Both make cheapies. The issue is in knowing the difference.
Nikon Monarch made in Japan is a well made scope the newer scopes are made in the Philippines and aren't as good .I like the Sightron S2 Big Sky a lifetime replacement warranty based here in the USA.If you have a problem with any Sightron you get a new scope no questions asked. They have the best warranty in the business.

leupolds is pretty hard to beat also
my friend had a nikon, I dont remember which model, but it looked pretty good, not too bad for what he paid
I have always heard good thing about Nikon products, but never owned a Nikon scope. I do however have a Burris scope on my deer rifle. Its the Full Field II, I am very happy with the Burris. It has a crisp clear view, it responed well to my adjustments, it was very easy to sight it in. The cross-hairs feature a BDC (bullet drop compensator).

My scope experience is pretty limited. I have only used a Tasco and a Burris. ...the Tasco came on my 336. To be perfectly honest, the only reason I bought the Burris is because when I was looking for a scope, I found it for sale here on LIF. But like I said earlier, I am happy with the Burris.

Good luck.

Yes Leupold is good but when you send a scope back to Sightron in a matter of days you have a brand new scope back.Leupold makes a repair and takes some time to get back. The Sightrons are made in Japan but is a U.S. company.
The Nikon Buckmaster is some nice glass. But Burris also makes some nice scopes.

That is an inaccurate statement... Just bought the Nikon Monarch 5-20x 44mm Nikoplex and it is engraved "made in the Philippines". I had no trouble with the customer service. It had fleck in the lens. Sent it to them and the turnaround time was less than 3 weeks.

Majority of the Burris Fullfield II's are now made in the Philippines as well.

Leupold without question.  Next up would probably be Burris.  Based on long term performance (with Leupold) and service.  Over 35 years experience with Leupold and I rate them No. 1.  I've got a Leupold Mk IV 16x in my shop (commercial rifle builder) that I use for a test scope on most of my builds, and I've actually found some defective (customer's) scopes by testing with the Leupold and then comparing groups fired with others.  Leupold's service over the years (when needed) has been positive and excellent.  They've built their reputation and they've earned it.  Many of the rest build "disposable" scopes... remember: any scope is "disposable" if you can't get it serviced easily and properly.  And these days when you can easily spend the same or more on a scope as you spend on a rifle, it pays to think long term.

Not true based on my experience. Bought the Nikon Monarch 5-20x 44 because friend has one (made in Japan). They are indistinguishable performance wise. What do you base your statement on?

The scopes made in Japan happened to be better made scopes from my experience. The Nikons made in the Phillippines suffered from QC.The Nikon Monarch is a good scope, just the newer scopes are not built as well. You said you had a problem with a Fillipino made Nikon. Not bashing Nikon QC issues happen and they have a good amount of factory refurbs on the market.
