Boy, 13, Busted For Illegal Marker Possession

Oklahoma City math teacher in citizen's arrest of student

DECEMBER 22--A 13-year-old boy was arrested Friday for using a permanent marker while in class at his Oklahoma City middle school, a violation of an obscure city ordinance.

According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, the boy was spotted "in possession of a permanent marker" by Roosevelt Middle School teacher DeLynn Woodside. The 50-year-old educator told cop Miguel Campos that the student was "writing on a piece of paper, which caused it to bleed over onto the desk."

Woodside, pictured at right, reported that the child, whose name was redacted by police from the report, attempted to hide the marker when she asked him for it. Strangely, Woodside's Facebook page reveals that her "likes and interests" include the official "Sharpie Permanent Markers" page on Facebook.

Campos reported that he allowed Woodside, a seventh grade math teacher, to "sign a citation" against the boy, who was then transported to the Community Intervention Center, a juvenile holding facility. A police sergeant subsequently "booked the marker into the property room."

A police spokesman referred to the student's bust as a "citizen's arrest" effectuated by Woodside.

The marker ban--which apparently is aimed at curbing graffiti--stems from a city ordinance making it illegal to possess spray paint or a permanent marker on private property (without the owner's permission).

This is one of the all-time stupidest things I have ever heard of. If I was the officer who received her call, I'd tell her to give the kid his marker back and tell him to leave it at home, call his parents, and go get some rubbing alcohol to clean the desk. This is up there in stupidity with the kid who got in trouble for having a piece of candy her friend gave her.
TO BAD IT WAS NOT A PRE BAN MARKER---I AGREE THIS IS ONE OF THE DUMBEST THINGS
This should be in the joke section of the forum.
Someone should arrest her for being ugly !

.....what has this Country gone to ?
I hope the kids parents fight this all the way and that so called teacher has to take a week off without pay.  :(
Suffolk has a similar ordinance on the sale of markers and spray paint, but this is ridiculous
I wonder how many phone calls & letters the teacher is going to receive, since her name, address & phone number are clearly visible on the complaint form...   ;)
WTF, that is one ugly woman I'll bet she blames the world her weight issue hence her petty meaness to a kid
This stuff was banned 30 years ago. So retro.
So now this kid has an arrest record because he "possessed" an illegal marker. This is not even school policy, but a local ordinance. If it was school policy, I can understand a detention. But lawmakers actually made a law that can bust people who possess permanent markers. Rant over.
Unfortunately, this is the kind of burned out teacher who should have retired long ago. She can't see the "big picture" and understand her role as a teacher, so she focuses on the exact letter of the law to punish a kid who had no malicious intent. I understand the ban was to deal with graffiti, but this case had nothing to do with vandalism. This teacher could have used this so called "incident" as a teachable moment, to talk about the law and it's true intent. Instead, she chose to embarrass this boy and felt it more important to wield her authority over him. Her pettiness, and mean-spirited act is a sure sign that she doesn't enjoy what she does and shouldn't be guiding children.

Years ago the marker would have been taken by the teacher, parents called and told they can pick it up after school if they want it back. Something is seriously wrong these days.
Actually the Dumberer, from this Dumb and Dumberer Duo, is the cop. He will forever be known as the one who busted the notorious Crayon Bandit. This is the kind of cop who should not be on the force because he has no idea what discretion or common sense is. He may know the law and his duty, but has no proper idea of when and how to apply either.

If you want to know what the problem really is, its the failure of parents to teach their children morality, self control, and common sense.
It started with the "...if it feels good do it..." 60's. Those "feel good" children grew up, are now in charge and they have a problem on their hands they can't solve: neither they, not the children they raised have any common sense, so they try to legislate it.
Look at our system of education: No one is failed, no one gets left behind, no one is pushed to learn or achieve. Achievement is not fair to the underachiever, so the system will dumb the kids down to a common level, where they are much easier to control.

rant over....

leo on the site should heve used his (or her) head and arrested the teacher for wasting his time, then explain to the powers at the school that they should be looking out for the kids, not some wack job.
This is so stupid, I wonder if he has to register when he moves. He wont be able to live with in a 1000ft of an art supply store. idiots.
What a load of complete and utter bollocks. Unbelievable......
Good thing he only had 1 marker on him...if he had more, I'm sure they would have charged him with being a dealer.
