So my fiance is up in RI for her final year of pharmacy school. Its her and 3 other girls. Trying to figure out what to get her in case of emergency. First thought is a shotgun, maverick 88 or something. But she is a bit "afraid" of a shotgun (im working on getting her over that). Second thought is a mag fed 22. Something shell feel comfortable with and know that she can handle if, god forbid she needs it. Then third thought is a few cans of bear spray around the house. This is obviously the easiest solution and I wouldn't have to worry about pissing anyone off. I know one of the girls is a libby obama lover so she might get mad if i put a gun in the house (not that i really care about what she thinks).

What do you guys think??

P.s. Her dad an I have already figured out the extraction plan if need be, and have hammered her with what do to in different scenarios.

Your fiamce' has rights. If the lib doesn't like guns that's her right. Then she should not have one but that has nothing to do with what your fiance' has.
If it really upsets her your fiance' should promise not to use it to protect the lib.

The first thing you must do is find out her comfort level. If "she is a bit "afraid" of a shotgun" until that is overcome, a shotgun is out of the question.
I like the 22. especially if she's comfortable with it. Actually, only if she's comfortable with it.
Is she comfortable shooting an intruder?
No hesitation about worrying about killing a threat.
If she has that hesitation than she should not have a gun for self defense.

Other suggestions.
Install a deadbolt on the inside of her room. So she can barricade herself in quickly and easily if need be.

RI liberal defense playbook.

1. Yell fire!
2. Pee on yourself.
3. Play dead.
4. Just go with the assault. It'll be over quicker if you don't fight.

I'd personally give her a Taurus Judge with some 410 shells. If she ever had to use it.... better to be judged by 12 and all...

ETA: If you do arm her, make sure she does not ever disclose that fact to anyone else in the house or out of it!

thanks for the response. Few thoughts.
First - "fiancé" lol.
Second - plan to take her shooting to let her decide which style she really feels comfortable with. I think shed be ok hip firing the shotgun but well see.
third - i didn't even think to talk to her about being able to shoot someone. That's a good thought.

First move im going to order some bear spray tonight and put it in the house while i figure out if i want to "upsize" her.

Whatever she is comfortable with is the most important thing. That includes trigger time, get some practice in.

And whatever route you two decide to take make sure it's accessible while being safe. Does no good locked in a safe upstairs.

Make sure you check local ALL laws before you take any steps. That's a VERY ultra liberal democrat state!

Is registration required, residency requirements for possession ie does she have a NYS driver license and not one from RI?

The laws are much worse in RI than NY and the kids can face some serious problems just by defending themselves, but of course that doesn't mean the shouldn't but you can also be implicated for supplying them with the weapon. Remember the leftist in the crowd!

A friend's girlfriend went to school in Providence and we went up to visit her a few times.

I have to say that where we were was really crappy, a prime example of the liberal progressive experiment gone bad

I wonder about the reality of getting her a gun.

Will she really be able to get to it, point it and shoot?

I think you should get her some training first, so she has a confidence level.

It's probably good advice for all of us. Who among us is ready to get to a firearm and pull the trigger? It's a question we need to ask ourselves, but I digress.

Let her try a 20 gauge shotty as they are pretty darned good for home defense. Also let her rack it. My wife still gets this evil grin when she racks it... And nothing says "eff off!" Like a shotgun slide.

Remember, prevention is better than shooting.

When I was in college there were a few assaults on campus on women.
Some woman were scared and a few asked me to teach them how to defend themselves.
I made an impromptu class on self defense class for women.
To understand situational awareness, using common objects for self defense , weak points to attack on a person's body etc.
That is something that is organized today.
I'm sure you should be able to find her a course. It's a good idea.

Concentrate on the shotgun familiarity. The learning curve and felt recoil are less with an autoloader. My fallback would be a pistol caliber carbine with self defense ammo.

While on campus carry a knife. I gave my daughter a Kershaw assisted opening folder. Tell her to keep it in her hand in her pocket when walking on campus alone.
