A 22-year-old man fatally shot his father after the older man tossed him a handgun and dared him to shoot, Jackson County authorities said today.

Zachary A. Bowers of Independence was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of his father, David A. Bowers, 54, of Rogers, Ark.

According to court records, Zachary Bowers allegedly told a police dispatcher Monday night, "Dad threw the gun in my hand and told me to pull the trigger. I pulled the trigger and shot him."

Police went to the home in the 1900 block of Quail Creek Drive before 10:30 p.m. Monday to investigate a reported aggravated assault. They found David Bowers' body inside and a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handgun under a sofa.

Zachary Bowers allegedly had been drinking vodka and argued with his father, according to court documents. David Bowers called a relative and asking to be picked up.

A short time later, Zachary Bowers called the same relative, saying he had shot and killed his father, according to court documents.

He was taken into custody Wednesday evening
