Hello All,
I need some ammo advice from the experts. I recently got my hands on a Remington 700 in .223. I like .223 for the cost of the round, and we only have 200 yards to shoot without driving a few hours (until I get a chance to try the 300 at Calverton in the spring). It has the 24" varmint barrel with a 1/12 twist. I've made a few upgrades to the gun, as can be seen in my other thread. So far I got a 4" group with wolf (had some sitting around), 2-3" with Remington UMC and 1" (best of 4 groups) with Hornady Tap at 100 yards. I got about 3-4" with Winchester Ranger at 200 yards. My question is, what else will give me the best bang for my buck accuracy wise from this rifle. All I'm doing is punching paper with it, no hunting. The Hornady Tap ammo was awesome, but if I'm spending $1.50ish per round I should have just went with .308 instead. Thanks!

I'd love to reload, but my 1 bedroom mansion just doesn't allow allow for it.  Gotta stick with production ammo until I can afford an upgrade.

My 700 in .223 will not stabilize anything heavier than a 55gr bullet because of the 1:12 twist. I have only shot it 100, and I don't remember if I was using Rem UMC or PMC, and it put 9 rounds in a one inch square. The next session, I tried some of my buddy's Black Hills 62gr, and immediately started having flyers. The cheap stuff worked so well for me, I never tried anything else.

I saw that at Dicks and thought about picking up just to try it. I guess I'll have to now, lol. Thanks!

I'll bet you could make top quality custom ammo at your kitchen table with a Lee hand press. I would recommend hand loads with Sierra 53 grain Match Kings.

have you done anything to the trigger? 700's have a trigger that can be tweaked to rival high price triggers, that can do wonders for grouping
I was worried about trying to modify the factory trigger, so I replaced it with a Timney. It's set to around 2 lbs. I'm starting to lose confidence in my shooting abilities, lol.

Summit 55gr VMax and softpoints have incredible accuracy out of my rifles. SSS and T&T usually carry them for about $49 for a box of 100.
