My uncle passed away yesterday, leaving 4 pistols to my cousins and one to me. They live in Esperance NY. The local Sheriff has possession of the pistols and had told my cousin that he can add the pistol I select to my Suffolk County license. My question is can I do this or do I have the pistol sent to an FFL and do the Yaphank Shuffle? Thanks.

I'd be asking the SCPD/SCSheriff Pistol License Bureau, not the people on an internet BB.

I personally think the Sheriff is wrong. While I have not lived on the Island in years, I still remember their process is more involved or insane then in most upstate counties. Where would the authority come from to allow an upstate Sheriff to act upon another counties license? Now if you did something illegal he certainly could take your permit, but that is a different senario. How would he issue you a coupon for another county?

I would be asking if could he ship them directly to your FFL of choice on the Island if you covered the shipping costs. If not, and I would not think he would or could, then they most likely would have to be dropped off at or picked up by a local FFL where your Uncle lived. That FFL would then ship them to your FFL on LI. More fees, but you are inheriting the guns.

When my granfather passed away in Cali, his handguns were dropped off at a local FFL who in turn shipped them to my FFL here in NYS. I picked my coupons and had them put on my license.

Thanks for the replies, SCPDHQ is busy today, big dog and pony show. But, it does have to be through FFL's. BTW, the Sheriff was under the belief I lived in the county that is why he said what he had said.

FOLLOW UP. My cousin had her FFL/Dealer go to the sheriff were she had to turn my uncle's pistols. He took possession of them and had the pistol I was left sent to SS in Yaphank, all paperwork is done but NYS has a delay for what ever reason. My Smith and Wesson 686 is on my license and now I wait for the call to come pick it up. Thanks for everyone's advice and input.

Doesn't really matter now - but you should have been able to get a purchase doc. from SCPD, and gone up to the sheriff and picked it up - then finish the yaphank shuffle... (FFL fees are probably cheaper than the time to make the drive)

Next, what do you mean "NYS has a delay"??? do you mean your NICS check? Glad it worked cleanly for you otherwise.

It not a big deal my friend was left 6 gun they are just doing a check to make sure none where used in a crime or stolen. I believe they are doing a ballistic check on the gun as well. It took him three month to get his.

I would believe that is so. The NICS computer/database was crapping itself. The guys at SS in Yaphank took my cell # and said they would call me when they got the call when everything cleared 2 pm exactly today, I got that call. 15 minutes later at home and 15 minutes more, on here sharing some GUN PORN.

The LGS has done many personal pick ups at the Sheriff's Office for handguns and sends them to the FFL.
Much easier, no ballistic tests or paperwork from the estate when an FFL to FFL is involved.
