To add a pistol to my license in Suffolk, I need to undergo the "Yaphank Shuffle". For the uninitiated, here's the Yaphank shuffle in all it's asinine glory:
1. Purchase a pistol from a dealer.
2. Take the purchase receipt to the Pistol Licensing division in Yaphank along with a $5 money order. Obtain a 'purchase document' (with raised seal), from the folks in Yaphank.
3. Take Yaphank's purchase document back to the dealer who will then release the pistol (following a NICS background check).
4. Take the pistol back to Yaphank. The folks in Yaphank will "inspect" the pistol and finally add the make/model/serialNumber to your Pistol license card
I understand that there are checks and balances here to ensure that the correct serial number makes its way onto our pistol license. I get it - our government doesn't trust us.
What I don't understand is why the difference between Suffolk and Nassau? I'm being told that the procedure is less time consuming for Nassau residents.
Why is that?
Are residents of Nassau county more -trustworthy- than the residents of Suffolk county?
What gives?
I'm actually surprised that this wasteful process isn't practiced in Nassau. Our Gov't will jump at the first chance to add additional administrative overhead (more overhead = more regulation = more employees = MORE TAXES). The more waste the better. Nassau is as corrupt as it gets, so I'm VERY surprised that they don't have to go through this nonsense like we do.
It's ridiculous that I need to take the day off work to add a pistol to my license, while my neighbor a few miles to the west of me can add a pistol without the back-and-forth nonsense.
How do we get this changed for Suffolk county without ruining things for our 2A friends in Nassau? Should we petition our Suffolk County executive? What (if anything) can be done about this? Am I off base here?
The courts have given the pistol licensing officer (the SCPD commissioner in the western towns of Suffolk County) broad discretion in administering handgun licensing, et. al.
The commissioner is appointed by the County Executive.
Downstate is more liberal than conservative.
We can do little to change things.
BTW - The shuffle has gone through various iterations over time.
ETA -
I had a discussion with a local gun store owner this past week. He believes that Suffolk may soon adopt Nassau county's process.
He also told me that he has recently noticed a change for the better.
The whole thing could be handled very similar to the way hunting licenses are printed and issued by the retailer accessing NY State's database.
The damn lottery figured out how to do it with remote terminals.
You could get a 10 day temporary paper gun registration (like the DMV) until the updated license shows up in the mail. Done!
The local gun store is supposed to look at your license before you even touch the handgun. He could pop those numbers into a terminal to validate your license and proceed from there.

Does it have to be a money order? Nassau accepts cards, doesn't make sense if that's the only payment. Might be moving into Suffolk so just trying to get an understanding.

Well that's a pain, hopefully they'll eventually take cards. I can understand the no cash thing but it sounds like they're just trying to make it as inconvenient as possible.

They could charge a surcharge to cover the CC fee.
I could care less about using credit cards. My gripe is with the purchase process and how I have to waste more time than my neighbor up the road does.
Wasn't a 2A class action lawsuit filed against Nassau county some time ago?
