$120 91/30 Scout Rifle Project

I am a good way through my 91/30 Scout rifle project.

I started with a 91/30 Parts gun from Southern Ohio Guns.

The gun started in rather poor shape, cracked stock, 3" counterbore on the barrel, bolt issues.

Stripped the entire gun down, and cleaned all the parts. Turns out the trigger spring was broken and the extractor was bent in to far, which caused some issues closing the bolt.

Replaced the spring, fixed the extractor and smoothed out all the trigger contact points with 600 grit paper. Also added a spring behind the trigger to get rid of the trigger play.

Then went to the stock. Fixed the crack, cut down to a sporter configuration, and baked it in the oven a few times to remove cosmoline. Sanded it down to remove the finish and recosted with 3 coats of tng oil followed by two coats of poly.

cut down the barrel to 19" last night and re-assebled today.

Now I am just waiting on the a 3/8 to weaver adaptor to mount on the rear sight base and a 2-7x pistol scope.

Cost Summary
Rifle $60
Replacement Spring $12
Scope $40
Base Adaptor $8
total $120

WHAT!? No pistol grip?! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Can't wait to see the muzzle blast from this one!
Looking good, cant wait to see the finished one with the scope mounted !
Don't shoot that near dry brush, you'll start a freakin fire!  Looking forward to seeing the finished project.
Nice. Mosins are fun to play with.

Does anyone know if T&T is still offering another sale on their Mosins and when? They had $90 rounds $110 hexs and did this "sale" price a few times last year. It's nice to pick through the litter and at that price can be worth it.
They had a Christmas sale 99 or 109, I cant recall the exact $, for round receivers. Recall when they had ads in the Daily Snooze?

Oh, I do. I remember when they had crates of $90 SKSs in great shape, way back when they advertised in the papers.

I picked up a 1938 Tula Hex with a good bore and great refinished stock from T&T last year for $110 (I believe the rounds were 90). I'd be game for some project Mosins at the "sale" price, but can't justify "Long Island retail" for a 91/30.
Was there a week ago the sale was over  and they had about 20, 91 30s
Nice. Planning on doing something similar soon, but I might not cut the barrel so's I can keep the irons/return to original.
looks cool.  This is what I did to my mosin

I have an untouched 91/30 already, so that gave me more lee way with the decision to cut it.

I originaly thought of going that way, but given the barrel condition, I dint think it would be worth while. I probably make another one and go that direction with it.
The rifle looks great... Look forward to seeing you shoot it at the range.
How much 'gunsmithing' does a project like this require? I'd love to do something similar, and I've been thinking about a 'project gun' a lot lately, but I have ZERO gunsmithing skills and only basic construction/around the house tools.

Poor thing never stood a chance... :(
Scope is mounted. I also sold off some parts to a memeber of the site for $20, so it is now a $100 91/30 scout rifle. Now to just hit the range.

Now all you need is the ATI bent bolt kit. Easy enough to install, works well, and looks better too.

So when you say "...hit the range..." you mean you actually want to hit something on the range besides the backstop?

Very nice work! Is the scope lens Polarized to protect you from muzzle flash blinding?
Finaly got to try it yesterday. Works well. Still need to fine tune scope. Muzzle Flash is impressive though.

Vedee nice! A sandbag or two would make your life easier.

Don't bother adjusting the scope, its supposed to shoot like that.... :X
