I placed a BEAUTIFUL unissued mint No 4 Lee Enfield on layaway and plan to pick it up on March 1st, but I desperately need a 5 Shot mag for it since I live in NYC, I used to see them online on Brownells by promag I think last year when I was looking for Mossberg parts but can't find any, if anybody sees one online or in a store let me know! I would be very thankful and will reward you with 300 rounds of XM855.

I asked for some suggestions on a few Enfield boards...will let you know if I get an answer.

Plus, here's a you tube of a guy who sporterized a bear up No.4....and how he cur down a 10 round mag to a 3 round mag. If you're not handy with metal work, I'll bet you can find a gunsmith (or tinknocker/machinist) who can do this.

She lives in NYC. She can't have more than 5 rounds, and must prove it to the powers that be with a receipt of some type, or she can't take possession.

Yea that is magazine that the rifle currently has, which holds too many rounds for the kingdom of NYC, sigh.

I did a quick search on google and there are quite a few people looking for them ... figured it was not an easy item to find so why not buy a 10 rounder and cut it to fit 5?

Out of more than idle curiosity...infact, a burning desire to find out....where did you order your No. 4 from? do they have any more?? and what did it cost you??? Now that the flames of burning Finn-mosinitis have abated, Enfield-itis has me. Looking for a Savage No.4, any Mark.

I feel the same way! The last gun I got was a beautiful Finnish M39 in unissued condition. so I have 5 Mosins now, thats why I jumped on this Enfield when I saw it at my fav gun shop in Long Island. I didn't see any others but I will keep my eyes open for one and let you know.

That is my current plan at the moment, I ordered an Enfield pro mag 10 rounder online and will look for a gunsmith in Long Island that will block it to hold 5 and make out a receipt, I will call Coliseum and ask and maybe Bensons out in Coram.

Try Bob ay Country Gunsmiths....he's listed here. Personally, and it's strictly my own individual opinion, I'd give Benson's a pass...there's been a lot of comment on the board about them, and I've never had a good experience with them.

Here are some of the replies I got:

How to make flush fitting magazine: http://www.303british.com/id34.html

Sympathy and a suggestion: Poor devils, I feel for them as I left 12 years ago.
Can you simply & permanently block the magazine to make it legal? Like some kind of wood, alloy or plastic plug permanently attached below the follower & a slightly shortened spring, for example, or does it have to look shortened as well?

Someone wants to trade. Don't know how to do the logistics of receiving the weapon. If interested I'll get his email: I have one I'd be willing to trade straight across for a 10 rounder. Let me know.

Let me know...good luck.

ArielNYC2006, I am not an expert on the no.4 I have what may OR NOT be one. But I have a fitting that I believe a floor plate attaches to. I don't know how many rounds the gun will hold with the floor plate or even if it is a real floor plate connection. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can just in. Would be interested to know myself.

Redcoat3340, I believe we have communicated on another Enfield post. I haven't figured out how to post pictures on PMs yet so I'll put it here.

I picked this up at a gun store a while back, I believe it is a No.5 Someone striped the bluing? off, Don't know why but if I had to guess I would say maybe some surface rust? I know it completely ruined the collector value but it just grab me, Like the way it looked, different.
I took a look and its really hard to make out any markings other then the serial no. 23xxx and a number below same no with a DA in front. It does have the "crowns " in a number of place but you'd pretty much expect that. And like I said it is amazing accurate. I heard that they cut some down I wouldn't be surprised if it was cut down.

Did you wind up doing this?
If so, how is the quality of the pro mag magazine?

I have a .308 2A1 SMLE which holds 12rds in the mag, I'd like to limit it to 10rds before April.
The only 10rd mag I've found is the pro mag version, and the reviews were pretty iffy...

I didn't need to do that, I was able to find a 5 round magazine for my Enfield! I played around with the promag and honestly I was disappointed at the function of the magazine, it just didnt seem to work correctly. Nothing beats an original Enfield mag. Ooh you have a 2A1 with the late 12 round magazine, I am jealous.

Ah, ok thanks. Yeah, I read the Promags have lots of feeding issues in the Enfields.

The 2A1 is a pretty neat rifle, but if I can't find a 10rd mag for it I might sell it off.
I just couldn't bring myself to register a 100+ year old design as part of an "Assault Weapon" ban.

Maybe I'll get lucky and find a 5rd mag like you did so I can keep it in the city, but parts for these seem rare...

I have a real #5 carbine that I have been hunting with since 1983.

In NY you can only have a 5 round mag for hunting since before I was born and thats a long time! I blocked the bottom of a standard 10 round Enfield mag so it only holds 4 rounds with 1 in the tube theres your 5.
I used a wood block and drilled 2 holes and put 2 screws through with the heads out the botton and the nuts inside and added a small tack weld to each nut so it can't be taken apart. I also painted a large 5 on the bottom so there is no confusion if questioned.

It will be 30 years this year and I've never been questioned yet but I think this hunting season will be very different!
