I zeroed in my new Crossbow. It's ready for the Pennsylvania season which is open now. New York allows crossbow hunting in the early archery season 14 days before regular season opens on November 18.
You are required to have a muzzleloader tag and a hunter safety card issued after 2014 or a filled out Crossbow certificate found in the DEC guide.
I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot at 40 yards at a deer.

Oh dam another thing I need to buy.

Never owned or shot a crossbow, Last weekend I finally used it and is ready for hunting . It's under $500 if you buy broadheads and a target.
All you need is a muzzleloader tag. The best time to be in the woods for a buck is around Halloween week.
You can buy these through Dick's or Cabela's. Barnett Quad S model.

No, Crossbow is treated as a Muzzleloader in New York.
The early archery season allows the use of the Crossbow for the last two weeks of the season which is a great time to shoot a buck in rut.

Since the DEC considers a Crossbow a Muzzleloader. The hunter may use either an Archery tag, DMP tag or late season Muzzleloader tag.

You probably need the Muzzleloader tag for Archery from looking at the DEC guide.

No, only archery is. The season is now open to hunt deer in Suffolk County.
November 4 is the start of Crossbow portion of the early Archery season in the Southern Zone excluding Westchester County.
