First Time for My Wife

My wife has never been particular enthusiastic about guns, but she's become obsessed with this election and she asked me to teach her how to shoot just in case. We finally got a chance to get down to the range yesterday and I started her off with a 10/22 takedown (plain jane) with cheap federal ammo. After 15 minutes of safety instructions and basic rifle mechanics she shot a 10 round quarter sized group at ten yards with iron sights--offhand. I thought it was beginners luck, but she shot another 30 rounds with similar results. I moved her out to 25 yards (at Mitchell Field) and she shot shot 1/2" groups offhand with iron sights ((with the exception of a few flyers that were probably ammo related based on the sound of the reports). I don't think I have ever done that in my life (or could do that). I also had her shoot 50 rounds on my mini 14, aside for the fact that both weapons were too long for her (and she was getting tired), she took to the mini just like the 10/22. In other words, 1.5" groups, off hand with iron sights using the mini at 25 yards. I have taken lessons, classes and have had thousands of rounds of practice and she is a better shot than me right out of the starting gate--and the guns weren't even close to fitting her (she's tiny and probably needs a compact sized/kids rifle that is better suited for her frame). I was so freaking proud!!! I think I am going to have to build her an AR for Christmas/Chanukah.
If SHTF, she'll be the family sniper.

Good stuff ! If you are going to build an AR for her encourage her to build it with you, if not going to be a gift.

Despite cultural mores that often predispose women to other activities, I found that women and young girls often outshoot male peers. Military weapons have higher recoil (or that annoying twang in an M16,lol) so my findings are based more on shooting 22s in high school and college varsity rifle than in the Army. My wife also outshoots me with our Henry levers. Wish I could just get her to go more often.

Thanks guys. We're going again next week and I am trying to get her to join a women's shooting club. Fortunately, my wife had no issues with the .22 or mini 14. I showed her how everything works mechanically and was patient with her and she just took off on her own. She even saved her targets---she was rightly proud of them. She'll have a hard time getting through my ammo--but god bless her if she wants to try.
She wants to try a shotgun, but Mitchell Field only allows slugs. I don't think a 110 pound woman shooting 1.25 ounce slugs from a 12g Mossberg 500 on her first day at the range is a good idea. I have a 100 pounds on her and my arm is sore after a box of shells.

I am actually just placed an order with PSA on a complete upper for an AR build. The Thordsen stock is too long for her, so I am going to use a spur and fixed stock to make it SAFE Act compliant. She really could use a 12.5"-13" LOP. The standard fixed length (14.5") is really unwieldy for her. Any of you guys have suggestions for a fixed that has some adjustments for length of pull so we can ideally both use it? In truth, a standard 6 position collapsible stock would really work for us, but those brilliant politicians have come up with a perfect scheme to make the use of modern sporting rifles by women in NY a true hardship.

The un-SAFE Act is SEXIST!!!

The Ares SCR isn't my cup of tea. It's a good concept, but it needs more work. The mag release is in a weird place and for $900 it's missing a forward assist, bolt hold open, just has a plan jane phophate barrel and a cheap MOE hand guard. The trigger (even on the gen 2) is gritty and a lot of the stores still have the old gen 1 (which doesn't even have a dust cover). There are definitely better options out there (and the LOP won't work for my wife anyway).

@Phoenix60. I think Obama needs to shed a few more tears... mainly for the heroes that died in Benghazi while Hillbitch debated what uniform spec ops should be wearing. But as the Hillbitch says, "At this point, does it even matter????"

zzrguy, I actually just assembled a SWEET AR for my wife with a thordsen FRS-15 stock, which provides a 13.5" LOP (without spaces). I think that should get the job done. This is going to be an early christmas/chanukah present for my honey:

PSA lower
PSA Upper
16" Melonite Barrel (PSA sourced from Wilson Combat). I replaced the A2 flash hider with a knurled thread protector that epoxied and staked to the barrel.
low profile gas block and 13" slim keymod hand guard
Mil-Spec Trigger Group that I polished and upgraded the springs (3.5-4 pounds)
mil-spec buffer tube and heavy duty buffer and buffer spring
raptor ambidextrous charging handle (on order)
nickle boron BCG
ambi safety
Magpul B.A.D Lever
Thordsen Customs Enhanced stock
MBUS sights
magpul two point sling with qd attachments.

Only thing missing for now is a light and optics, which she'll need to pick out for herself. I took it to the range to get it sighted in today and work out the kinks. There were no kinks. The damn thing shot like butter for 200 rounds. Way more accurate than the mini 14 and much easier to handle. She's going to love this rifle. Only problem is that I love it too!!! We might need to have twins. The mini is going to end up getting a lot more safe time unfortunately.
