Why are you doing this? What was wrong with the rifle as it was?
If you really wanted a piston upper you really should have built one from a kit.

Yeah, I'm really not getting any of this. Why buy an SCR and do all these mods to it? Why not just build an AR the way you want it from scratch?

I shot an SCR at Campsite's range day. I understand there were a lot of people shooting it but the hand guard was so hot I couldn't hold it. I had to hold it by the mag well. That's all I remember about it.

my reason for the latest post was twofold: mention to potential buyers that the gas piston system sold by ARES for the SCR is not an easy drop in change out as they say, and to ask if anyone had any suggestions for a hand guard that might work with it. Kinda sorry I asked.

Doesn't anybody know how to take any form of criticism anymore?

No wonder this country is in the crappy state that it's in if everyone gets their panties in a bunch over everything!

Yup, that is exactly my experience with mine.  That pencil barrel is pretty thin.  I find that after 50-60 rounds, the barrel is pretty hot.  After 100+ rounds, the hand guard is pretty warm.  After 150+ rounds, you need to put the gun down.  I've burnt myself a few times grabbing it before it cooled.  Still a fun rifle to shoot (pretty accurate) but I will usually pop off 5 mags, then switch to something else for a while and then go back to it.
